10 years ago, the idea of ​​a "made in Vietnam" Broadway musical was born. At that time, friends thought Duong Cam was "crazy".

But Thang Long Music and Dance Theater, with the support of the theater director, People's Artist Tan Minh; along with scriptwriter Dinh Tien Dung and stage director, Meritorious Artist Phung Tien Minh, gave wings to that " madness", so that last November, Chi Pheo's Dream welcomed its first audiences .

Musician Duong Cam told Tuoi Tre Online that compared to music shows with stars that guarantee box office success, for a musical to welcome about 1,000 audiences/night and run for 10 nights, it is an "unimaginable" journey, "beyond the crew's expectations".

It is not that Vietnam did not have musicals in the past. It is just that most of them were taken from Broadway originals or translated into Vietnamese. Meanwhile, some of the traditional classical musicals lacked entertainment value, making this genre not accessible to the general public and still in the low-lying area of ​​Vietnam's entertainment industry.

Borrowing the guise of a Western musical but still containing Vietnamese "fish sauce, pickles, and eggplant", Chi Pheo's Dream is fresh and entertaining. As the character At says, it is a "meal tray" of "a real country person".

The show combines music (xam, rap, pop ballad, jazz, funk, rock... everything), drama, dance and acting, with a live orchestra and live singing, with an international color but still maintaining national cultural identity.

The character Chi Pheo was originally played by Dong Hung; however, due to his schedule, the singer could not continue until the end. Ngoc Hieu "arrived" as a surprise, for both the crew and the audience.

Born in 1996, under the Hai Phong Contemporary Arts Theater, Hieu is not a familiar name to the capital's audience. Replacing Dong Hung from Wednesday night, he has had a lot of pressure.

But on stage, the young artist "let loose" when transforming into one of the best characters in Vietnamese literature.

Hieu's inherent pop ballad voice is enhanced and expanded to other genres. Sometimes drunk, sometimes sober, sometimes furious, sometimes pure... Fierce, gentle, the "human seed" of the character Chi Pheo through Ngoc Hieu's performance on the Broadway musical stage is full of freshness and emotion.
