Chinese people use AI to predict lottery

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/01/2024

In a post that went viral on the Xiaohongshu platform, Gu Xiangnan shared her experience buying lottery tickets based on numbers generated by Google’s Gemini-Pro. She initially provided the chatbot with two years of historical data from the Super Lotto lottery, in which players have to pick five numbers from a set of 35 balls and two bonus numbers from another set of 12 balls.

Among the five numbers Gemini picked, two had two winning numbers and the other two had only one winning number. As a result, Gu Xiangnan did not receive any prize from Super Lotto. Gu also spent 20 yuan betting on Union Lotto but only won 5 yuan.

The post has garnered over 5,000 views, with some claiming to have won small prizes using the AI-suggested numbers. According to SCMP , ChatGPT and Gemini-Pro are not officially released in China, so users often access them via VPN.

Many people believe that chatbots will help increase their chances of winning.

Gemini said that the generated numbers are random and follow certain rules, and advised Ms. Gu to consider the lottery as an entertainment activity, not an investment or a way to make money. According to Ms. Gu, Gemini only predicts lottery results by choosing lucky numbers recently and winning frequently in the past.

China's lottery market is expected to reach around 600 billion yuan in revenue by 2023, with an estimated nearly 200 million people regularly buying lottery tickets.

Lottery is a game of chance and picking the right numbers can be a matter of pure luck. While complex AI algorithms have no particular advantage over human prediction, that doesn’t stop people from using AI in the hopes of winning.

According to Mashable, in April 2023, Mr. Patthawikorn Boonrin, who lives in Thailand, shared on TikTok that he won 2,000 baht thanks to ChatGPT. Mr. Aaron Tan, a Singaporean, also won 40 USD with numbers suggested by ChatGPT.

In May 2023, data scientist Rohith Teja decided to try his luck with a 2.50 euro lottery ticket. Teja used random numbers generated by ChatGPT and won 6 euros. However, another ticket Teja bought with numbers generated by ChatGPT based on historical data analysis did not contain the winning number.
