Remon Naeem Daniel's biggest surprise about Vietnamese culture was that "Vietnamese people wake up very early and eat very substantial breakfasts." He was once "stunned" to learn that his wife could have a large bowl of pho or a plate of broken rice for breakfast.
"For Egyptians, those hearty dishes are usually the main course for lunch or dinner," shared Hoang Mai Trang, Daniel's wife.
But later, after getting used to that way of eating, Daniel was able to eat pho and beef noodle soup for breakfast just like his wife.
The couple, a Vietnamese wife and an Egyptian husband, currently live in Dubai.
At 33 years old, Mai Trang has been working and living in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for the past 8 years.
Mai Trang and Daniel met at the first hotel where she worked in Dubai. At the time, Trang worked in housekeeping, while Daniel worked in front desk. Currently, both of them work for a chain of Vietnamese restaurants in Dubai.
They immediately took a liking to each other. However, when Trang first arrived, her English wasn't very good. Therefore, the language barrier was the first difficulty they encountered.
After dating for about three years, Trang and Daniel got married in Vietnam in 2019 but did not register their marriage. Shortly after, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, separating the couple for two years. "He was stuck in the Maldives, while I was in Vietnam," Trang recounted.
In 2021, as countries gradually reopened, they both returned to Dubai for work. In November 2022 – exactly three years after their wedding in Vietnam – the couple traveled to Egypt to have a church wedding and officially register their marriage.
The two weddings were held in two different countries, three years apart, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Trang shared that initially, Daniel's family didn't think he would marry a foreigner. Everyone always thought he would marry an Egyptian woman, also a follower of the Orthodox faith.
But that year, before bringing Trang home to meet his family, Daniel insisted to his relatives that he only wanted to marry a Vietnamese girl. “Luckily, from the first time we met, his family liked me very much and provided full support for us to complete the marriage procedures.”
On Trang's family's side, everyone supported and was excited about this relationship. From the first time they met, her parents and two younger siblings took a liking to Daniel.
Egypt was a rather unfamiliar and distant country to Trang, but after witnessing and experiencing its culture, she found it to be a fascinating place with a long-standing cultural heritage.
"After visiting Egypt, I realized it's a developing country, still retaining much of its rustic charm, with very affordable food. The people still maintain a traditional lifestyle to some extent."

After eight years of dating and living with a foreigner, the couple's lives have become quite different.
"When we first met, we had misunderstandings because of cultural differences. I'm East Asian and very hesitant to express my feelings or emotions, but people from the Middle East are the opposite. They express their love for their families every day and always say whatever comes to mind."
When we first met, he found me quiet and aloof, thinking I didn't like him, so he was afraid to bother me and didn't dare to approach me. It wasn't until we shared our feelings that we understood the differences in how we express affection between our two cultures.
Since I met him, I've gradually become more open and always express my thoughts. That has helped us understand each other better.”
Daniel is traveling to Vietnam with his wife's family.
In Trang's eyes, Daniel was a thoughtful and sweet husband in every action and gesture. When they went out, he always let her walk on the inside. He also carried everything, "even if there were 10 bags, he wouldn't let me carry any of them."
“Whenever my family faced difficulties, he was always ready to help. He also never criticized my appearance. Since we met, my appearance has changed a lot – sometimes I was thin, sometimes I was twice or three times as fat as him. But he always complimented me on being beautiful and petite, and he never once said anything that hurt my feelings about my appearance.”
Trang still fondly remembers a sweet memory Daniel shared with her. Back when she worked at the hotel, her job was very demanding, and there were days when she came home late, completely exhausted.
One day, upon returning to the staff dormitory, Daniel surprised Trang by secretly cooking Vietnamese-style braised pork with peppers and tomato soup.
"I never taught him how to cook these dishes, but he noticed and remembered. That small gesture made all my fatigue disappear. To this day, I still remember that sweet act," Trang shared.
Perhaps the "sweet reward" that Trang received is the result of Daniel growing up in a family filled with love between family members, as Trang observed when interacting with her husband's family. "That love was shown in the way his mother always meticulously prepared meals for the whole family and always insisted that the children eat until they were full."
Trang feels fortunate to be married into such a loving family and always reminds herself to cherish what she has.
