This statement was made by Josep Borrell at an event in Spain on August 20th.
Borrell said: “We mustn’t be naive, we have no interest in engaging in a trade war… but perhaps it is unavoidable.”
According to him, inexpensive products manufactured in China, including electric vehicles, are being diverted to the European market due to higher tariffs in the US.
"The U.S. isn't asking us when they ban imports of Chinese cars; they're not going to ask us where those Chinese cars are going if they're not going to the U.S.… I'm sure they're going to the European market, and this is creating a competitive problem for the EU industry," he said.
This week, the European Commission (EC) proposed a fixed tariff of up to 36.3% on electric vehicles manufactured in China.
Beijing has also launched an anti-subsidy investigation into dairy products imported from the 27-member bloc, in addition to existing anti-dumping investigations into spirits and pork products.
