Gardeners make hundreds of millions in profit as ornamental tangerines for Tet sell out

(Dan Tri) - Purchasing power is higher than expected, the pink grapefruit garden invested more than 100 million VND brought Mr. Hong and his wife ( Dong Thap ) nearly 400 million VND on the occasion of Tet Giap Thin 2024.

In the days leading up to Tet, Mr. Ha Thanh Hong (73 years old, living in Vinh Thoi commune, Lai Vung district, Dong Thap) and his wife are both taking care of their ornamental tangerine garden and "regretting". The tangerine garden is in its most beautiful days, every tree is full of fruit, the fruit is smooth and round.

"I didn't expect the purchasing power to be so strong this year. 150 pots of tangerines were sold out since the beginning of December. Many customers have already taken their goods. There are only a few trees left in the garden. I hope people take them late so I can still see them. Seeing the garden empty is both fun and regretful," the old farmer said. Pink tangerines are a typical agricultural product of Lai Vung district. Almost every house has a tangerine garden, both for ornamental purposes and to sell fruit. Many families also provide tourism services. In the days leading up to Tet, the whole area is covered with picturesque tangerine gardens, crowded with visitors.

Mr. Hong has more than 40 years of experience growing tangerines. Previously, he had a 5,000m2 garden growing tangerines to sell fruit. In the past 10 years, because of his age and poor health, he switched to growing potted tangerines to sell as ornamental plants, which is easier and brings in higher income. "Making potted tangerines is 10 times more profitable than growing tangerines to sell fruit, and the work is much easier. The only difference is that growing potted tangerines requires experience, meticulousness and hard work, without perseverance it is not possible," Mr. Hong shared. The old farmer divided the 500m2 garden into 3 parts, one part for growing embryonic tangerines, one part for growing reserve tangerines, and the remaining part for commercial tangerines. Mr. Hong said that after half a year of planting embryonic tangerines, they will be put in pots and nurtured for another year.

Once the tangerine tree is big and strong enough, Mr. Hong will adjust the weather to intervene technically so that the tree bears fruit and has the most beautiful fruit right on Tet. The time from when the tangerine tree bears fruit until the fruit ripens is almost a year. During this time, the grower must monitor the tree and take care of it every day. "If the tree has a minor disease that is not detected in time, it can quickly weaken, easily get new diseases and risk spreading to the whole garden. When the tangerine tree is put into a pot, only fertilizer is applied, no chemicals are used, so the care is very strict. When the tree is weak and needs to be cared for and restored, that is when the grower's skills and patience are most challenged. Many people want to follow the profession but often cannot get through this stage," the old farmer said. Pointing to the tangerine trees in his garden, Mr. Hong affirmed: "Completely clean, you can pick the fruit and eat it right away. Unique goods, can be displayed for 2-3 months without spoiling."

With the cost of producing a pot of tangerine trees being about 1 million VND, the average selling price being about 3 million VND, this year Mr. Hong and his wife made a big profit. "I have collected money from the whole garden, nearly 400 million VND. I didn't expect that this year the purchasing power would be strong, the more expensive the product, the easier it would be to sell. The trees priced at 4-5 million VND were bought first," said Ms. Le Thanh Thuy (70 years old, Mr. Hong's wife).
