Since mid-November of the lunar calendar, yellow apricot gardeners in Da Nang have been busy picking leaves, pruning, and fertilizing. This is an important step to stimulate apricot trees to bloom on time, serving the Tet market.
In the last days of the year, the cold and rainy weather in Da Nang has caused apricot gardeners to worry and rush to pick leaves so that the flowers will bloom in time for the Lunar New Year 2025.
It is known that this is an important stage to nurture trees to serve the Lunar New Year market. Apricot growers must rely on experience and carefully calculate the weather to choose the right time to pick leaves.
It is noted that in Mr. Pham Van Chung's apricot garden (Hoa Phuoc commune, Hoa Vang district), there are about 200 apricot trees of various types such as 5-petal yellow apricot, pink-leaf apricot... Most of the apricot trees here are old, balanced in shape, with many beautiful shapes of branches and trunks.
“But this year, most of the apricot trees have lost their leaves early, unlike every year. If the cold and rainy weather continues until close to Tet, there is a high risk that many apricot trees will stop budding and not bloom,” Mr. Chung shared.
During this period, in addition to picking leaves, farmers also have to take care of every small detail such as watering, fertilizing, and preventing pests and diseases for the plants.
According to the garden owner, the current price of apricot trees ranges from several million to hundreds of millions of dong, depending on the size and shape of the tree.
The price of renting apricot trees during Tet ranges from several million to several tens of million VND per pot. During this time, many gardeners in Da Nang also hire seasonal workers to take care of and pick apricot leaves, with wages ranging from 200,000 - 250,000 VND/day.
The erratic weather caused some plants to flower early.
At Tran Ngoc Loc's apricot garden (Hoa An ward, Cam Le district), workers are actively removing leaves from more than 300 apricot trees in the rain. Loc said that for trees with the same bud size, leaf removal must be done synchronously so that the apricot trees bloom evenly and the flowers bloom beautifully at the right time.
“My nearly 300 apricot trees are being continuously defoliated from morning to evening. This year, many people have come to rent apricot trees to play Tet, I have to take good care of them so that the flowers bloom on time and are delivered to customers for Tet. The rental price ranges from 2 to 40 million depending on the size of the apricot trees,” said Mr. Tran Ngoc Loc.
According to Mr. Loc, even for large gardeners with many years of experience, taking care of apricot trees to bloom on time is not easy. If the weather turns warm and sunny in the 12th lunar month, apricot gardens that have had their leaves removed early are at risk of blooming before Tet.
