The 2023 Venice International Film Festival, taking place from August 30 to September 9 on Venice Lido Island (Italy), will open with the film "Comandante" by director Edoardo De Angelis (Italy).
The organizing committee has officially announced the list of 23 films competing for the prestigious Golden Lion award at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival.
According to the artistic director of the 80th Venice Film Festival, Mr. Alberto Barbera, the 23 films competing for the Golden Lion include feature films, documentaries and television series.
Alberto Barbera also said many stars will miss the traditional red carpet opening of the Venice Film Festival, but the event will still attract a series of top films and artists.
The film "Comandante" by director Edoardo De Angelis was also chosen by the organizing committee as the opening film of the 80th Venice Film Festival, replacing the film "Challengers" by director Luca Guadagnino.
Earlier, the Organizing Committee said that the film "Challengers" would not participate in the film festival following a decision from the producer, due to the ongoing strike in Hollywood.
"Comandante" is a film based on the true story of a submarine captain who rescued 26 people from a shipwreck during World War II. The role of the captain is played by actor Pierfrancesco Favino. The film promotes moral values and human solidarity.
The movie "Comandante" will be released on August 30 at the Palazzo del Cinema (Lido di Venezia).
In addition to the film "Comandante," many other heavyweights will also compete for the Golden Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, including "The Killer" by director David Fincher, "Dogman" by director Luc Besson, "Maestro" by director Bradley Cooper, "Origin" by African-American director Ava Duvernay, "Priscilla" by Sofia Coppola or "Ferrari" by director Michael Mann, "Memory" (by Michel Franco), "Io Capitano" (Matteo Garrone), "Evil Does Not Exist" (Ryûsuke Hamaguchi), "The Green Border" (Agnieszka Holland), "The Theory of Everything" (Timm Kröger), "Poor Things" (Yorgos Lanthimos)...
Among them, "Maestro" about American composer Leonard Bernstein, is directed by and stars Bradley Cooper, who brought his directorial debut "A Star is Born" to the 2018 Venice Film Festival.
Two other biographical films participating in the Venice Film Festival this year also received attention: "Priscilla" by Sofia Coppola and "Ferrari" directed by Michael Mann.

The 80th Venice International Film Festival has five female directors in the race for the Golden Lion award.
Among them, female director Ava DuVernay made history as the first African-American female filmmaker to compete for the Golden Lion with the film "Origin." The film focuses on "dissecting" racism in America.
In addition to the Golden Lion award, more than 30 other works will compete for the "Horizon" award - the Venice Film Festival's international award category for new cinematic trends.

The 2023 Venice International Film Festival will also feature around 19 science fiction and documentary films, two television series and one short film. However, these works will not compete for awards.
