Farm and bread

He shared that depending on the characteristics of each state, Vietnamese people in Australia make a living with many different jobs. For example, Vietnamese people in Queensland are strong in fishing because they live near the sea, while Vietnamese people in Sydney or Melbourne work as tailors, babysitters, open restaurants, and do small businesses.

Farming (also known as "farming" in Vietnamese) is a profession that brings high income in Australia. And the Australian government also encourages foreign workers to come to this country to work under favorable conditions.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, most Australian farm workers lost their jobs, so farm owners were in dire need of workers. According to many Vietnamese people in Australia, at first the Chinese wanted to take over almost all of this industry, including cattle and cattle farming.

However, the Australian government has stepped in strongly to prevent farm owners from selling to foreigners. The government's way of supporting them is to open the door to immigration for workers from Southeast Asian countries, at the same time opening up great job opportunities.

In particular, in winter, when vegetables must be grown in greenhouses, the price of this item increases sharply. Therefore, winter is also considered the "business" season for farmers. Vietnamese people at farms focus on picking strawberries, harvesting kohlrabi, onions, etc., with an income of 25-27 AUD/hour.

Another high-income profession in Australia is bread making. Vietnamese bread is very different from Australian bread. Vietnamese people in Australia still like to eat the same types of bread as in Vietnam, so Vietnamese bread makers are willing to please their customers by making it the traditional way.

There are also some jobs that attract many Vietnamese people in Australia such as nursing, elderly care, plumbing, etc.

Try to get into college

Through the days of visiting Australia and chatting with friends and acquaintances here, I realized that it is easier for unskilled workers to find jobs. Even many people have university degrees in Australia but their income is not high compared to those who are willing to work hard.

For example, I understand that the average salary paid to workers in Western Australia, where there are many mining projects, is already over 100,000 AUD/year.

People's Artist Le Thuy added that bricklayers, ironworkers, air conditioner repairmen, plumbers, etc. all have high incomes and if you want them to do repairs, you have to register early to schedule them.

The tourism and hotel industry is one of Australia's training strengths and there are quite a lot of Vietnamese people participating in this industry. I bought a ticket for a tour organized by Vietnamese people in Melbourne, the owner of the company is also the driver and tour guide.

Each trip has about 16 guests, and every day in the fall there is a tour taking guests to visit the Puffing Billy steam train, which is over 100 years old, ornamental plant nurseries, forests with changing leaves in the fall... The income from this profession is quite good thanks to the abundant number of tourists coming to Australia in general and Victoria in particular.

In reality, according to People's Artist Le Thuy, young people studying abroad in Australia have tried to go to university, and quite a few of them have gone on to graduate school to get degrees that will prepare them for a more solid future.

Lots of support from the Australian government

Currently, the Vietnamese community in Australia is growing stronger and stronger, both in quantity and quality, not only preserving the unique cultural identity of the homeland but also spreading it to Australians and other communities, through many activities such as opening Vietnamese language classes, holding local markets selling Vietnamese specialties, organizing Lunar New Year celebrations...

The cost of living in Australia is not low. Photo: To Thu

Famous singer Hoai Thanh added that the social welfare system in Australia is very good, with many types of subsidies such as job search, travel expenses, childcare... along with support in medical examination and treatment, education , student loans for university...

However, according to him, to have a full life in Australia, the cost is not easy at all. For example, 1 kg of basa fish costs 8 AUD (nearly 130,000 VND), 1 kg of pork costs about 10 AUD (nearly 160,000 VND)... In total, the cost of food is about 120 AUD/month (about 1.9 million VND) for one person, provided that it is just a frugal, unpretentious menu.

In addition, the cost of trains, buses, insurance, living expenses, medicine when the weather changes... The total is about 1,500 AUD/month/person (more than 23.5 million VND).

Settling down

I visited a house for sale in Melbourne’s Springvale area with a starting price of 2 million AUD. The auction result was a Vietnamese bidder winning at 2,156,000 AUD.

Vietnamese people in the community expressed their excitement, because the reason why housing prices in Australia have been increasing for a long time is because Chinese people are flocking to do real estate business.

In fact, buying an apartment in installments in Australia is not difficult. If you are an Australian citizen or have a permanent residence permit, you can borrow up to 80% with an interest rate of around 5% if you can prove your income. And Vietnamese people have made constant efforts to settle down and make a living in Australia.
