The first female director in the history of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

The Prime Minister has just issued a decision appointing Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai as Director of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. With this decision, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City will have its first female director.

Today (December 15), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed a decision appointing Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai as Director of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, born in 1974 in Quang Ngai province, graduated with a degree in chemistry from the University of Ho Chi Minh City (now the University of Science , Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City). She was appointed associate professor in 2014 and professor in 2020.

Previously, in June last year, the Prime Minister announced the appointment of Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Principal of the High School for the Gifted and Vice-Rector of the University of Science, to the position of Vice-Director of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai previously served as Vice-Head and Head of the Chemistry Department and was appointed Vice-Rector of the University of Science in 2021. In January 2022, Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was also appointed by the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City to the additional position of Principal of the High School for the Gifted.

Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai is a leading scientist in the research of medicines from Vietnamese medicinal plants, with many important contributions to the medical and pharmaceutical industry.

Her research team has successfully developed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis using domestically sourced medicinal herbs. To date, Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has published over 80 prestigious international articles. For her contributions, she has received numerous prestigious awards, including a commendation from the Prime Minister and the Kovalevskaia Award – a prestigious award for female scientists in the field of natural sciences.

Recently, on October 2nd, at the 17th Conference of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS, awarded full membership to two Vietnamese professors – including Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai. With this recognition, Professor Mai becomes one of the first Vietnamese female scientists to achieve this title.

With the appointment of Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai as Director of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, the Board of Directors of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City now consists of: Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai as Director; and two Deputy Directors: Associate Professor Nguyen Minh Tam and Associate Professor Tran Cao Vinh.

Previously, on September 3rd, the Prime Minister issued a decision to transfer and appoint Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, to the position of Permanent Deputy Minister of Science and Technology.
