On October 8th, the State Council of Professors announced the list of candidates recommended by the Councils of Professors in each field and interdisciplinary fields for consideration for recognition as professors and associate professors in 2024.

The latest list includes 598 candidates (public list) recommended by the Council of Professors in each field and interdisciplinary fields for consideration for recognition as professors and associate professors in 2024.

Previously, this list included 673 candidates. The interdisciplinary professorial council for History - Archaeology - Ethnology/Anthropology has 1 professor candidate and 4 associate professor candidates.

The sole candidate for Professor in the field of History-Archaeology-Ethnology is Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City; the four candidates for Associate Professor in this field are Nguyen Van Sang - University of Education, Da Nang University; Hoang Thi Tham - University of Commerce; Pham Duc Thuan - Can Tho University; and Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - Hanoi University of Education.

According to the 2024 Professor title recognition document, Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan was born in 1974 and hails from Tan An commune, Can Duoc district, Long An province.

Ms. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Oriental Studies, specializing in Southeast Asian Studies, in 1997 from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2002, she was awarded a Master's degree in Anthropology, specializing in Social and Cultural Anthropology, from the University of Toronto, Canada.

In 2012, she was awarded a PhD in History, specializing in Ethnology, from the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. She was appointed/recognized as an Associate Professor in Ethnology in 2018.

The career path of the only female candidate for Professor in her 70s in 2024, who served as the president of a prestigious university, is as follows:

From September 1998 to May 2000, she was a teaching assistant in the Department of Oriental Studies.

From June 2002 to September 2008, she was a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology.

From September 2008 to February 2013, she served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Anthropology.

From February 2012 to April 2018, Ms. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan served as the Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

From June 2016 to the present, Associate Professor Ngo Thi Phuong Lan has been the Director of the Center for Rural Development - Seamaul Undong, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

From April 2018 to the present, Associate Professor Ngo Thi Phuong Lan has been the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2023, Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan was reappointed by the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) as the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-HCM) for the term 2023-2028. She is the first female rector of this university and this is her second term.

Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan's main research areas are Anthropology/Ethnology of the Economy ; Ethnic Livelihoods; Ecological and Environmental Anthropology; Agricultural and Rural Tourism; and Development Anthropology.

Associate Professor Ngo Thi Phuong Lan has supervised two doctoral students who successfully defended their dissertations; supervised 19 master's students who successfully defended their theses; and is currently supervising three doctoral students (one has defended their dissertation at the professional level, and one has completed two doctoral research topics). Associate Professor Ngo Thi Phuong Lan has completed nine research projects and fifteen research proposals at the institutional level and above.

She has published 53 scientific articles and 1 article in a prestigious international journal with acceptance, including: 5 articles in prestigious international journals (ISI/Scopus) (1 article published before Associate Professor); 1 article in the Scopus database; 40 articles in national specialized journals; 4 articles in international journals (3 articles published before Associate Professor); 2 articles in international proceedings; 1 article in national proceedings; 1 article in a prestigious international journal (ISI/Scopus, Q1) (accepted for publication).

Candidate Professor Ngo Thi Phuong Lan has published 13 books and 4 book chapters (2 international chapters; 2 domestic chapters), from reputable domestic and international publishers, including: 1 book from Cambridge Scholars; 8 books from Ho Chi Minh City National University Publishing House (1 book co-edited); 2 books from National Political Publishing House (co-edited); 1 book from Social Sciences Publishing House; 1 book from Tri Thuc Publishing House (co-translator); 1 book chapter from Springer Publishing House; 1 book chapter from Asian Atsiu International Publishing House; and 2 textbook chapters from Ho Chi Minh City National University Publishing House.

Regarding awards and recognition, Ms. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan has received numerous certificates of merit and prestigious titles, such as the Certificate of Merit for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas in Vietnam based on the Saemaul spirit of South Korea, awarded by the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk Province, South Korea in 2024; a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister for achievements in her work, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland in 2019; many certificates of merit from the Ministry of Education and Training for outstanding performance in her work during the academic years from 2015-2016 to 2021-2022; a certificate of merit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; a certificate of merit from the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City; a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, along with many certificates of merit from organizations such as the Vietnam Farmers' Association, the Vietnam Women Intellectuals Association, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union…

In her application for recognition of the Professor title in 2024, the female candidate, born in the 1970s, stated: "I have been fulfilling the standards and duties of an educator as stipulated in Clause 2, Article 61 of the Education Law. From 2018 to 2023, I consistently performed my duties excellently and received the titles of Outstanding Performance, Excellent Lecturer, and Emulation Fighter at the national and ministerial levels."
