Speed up to overcome difficulties

At the construction site of the Kinh Mon River overpass and the road connecting the interchange with Highway 5, the working atmosphere is always urgent. Mr. Nguyen Van Hue, the site commander, said: "The unit regularly maintains 50 - 60 workers for the bridge project, divided into many teams to deploy simultaneously. For the road project, on average, 30 - 40 workers along with a system of rollers, graders, spreaders... are mobilized, ready to reinforce when entering the peak period."

According to Mr. Hue, the construction of the bridge arch structure is considered the most complicated item. This is an important structural part, the main load-bearing part, requiring absolutely precise welding and assembly techniques. The welding team must all have 4G, 5G certificates, equivalent to the skills of shipbuilders. Due to the technical requirements, workers cannot work at night to ensure safety and quality of the project, the contractor arranged for construction during the day, speeding up the progress, striving to complete ahead of schedule.

However, this year, the unusual weather, prolonged heavy rains and the impact of many storms caused the river water level to rise, the current to be strong, disrupting the construction progress, especially in underwater items. To meet the progress requirements, the construction unit organized overtime to make up for the progress.

Mr. Vuong Van Hung, a worker at Khang Nguyen Infrastructure Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company - one of the construction contractors, said: "We have been informed by the Project Management Board and the Site Commander about the construction progress. We remind each other to work with a high sense of responsibility, ensure safety during construction and strive to exceed the set plan."

Strive to "finish" a month early

The Kinh Mon River Overpass Construction Investment Project and the access road connecting the interchange with National Highway 5, invested by the Tay Hai Phong Construction Investment Project Management Board, started construction in October 2024. The project is implemented in Phu Thai commune and Tran Lien ward, with a scale of a level 2 road bridge, a designed vehicle speed of 80 km/h, and a total length of about 1.55 km. Of which, the road section is 957.8 m long, the roadbed is 12 m wide, the road surface is 11 m wide, and the box retaining wall is 23.6 m long. The bridge section is permanently built with prestressed reinforced concrete and reinforced concrete, with a central arch span, and a total length of 568.6 m.

According to the West Hai Phong Construction Investment Project Management Board, up to now, the Kinh Mon River Overpass Construction Investment Project and the access road connecting the interchange with National Highway 5 have reached more than 80% of the volume. In the bridgehead road section, the foundation and crushed stone grading are basically completed. The bridge section has completed all 14 piers, cast and installed 12 Super T girder spans. Of which, the steel arch structure of the main bridge span, considered the most complicated item, has also been fabricated and installed. In addition, the construction of the riverbank and dike reinforcement section has completed 50% of the volume and is continuing to be implemented. "With this progress, the project is expected to be completed in November 2025, "finishing" about a month earlier than the contract", informed Construction Site Commander Nguyen Van Hue.

The investment objective of the Kinh Mon River overpass construction is to form an inter-regional traffic axis, connecting the economic centers of the two regions of East and West Hai Phong and with neighboring provinces such as Quang Ninh, and gradually completing the regional traffic network according to the plan. The completed project will meet the increasing transportation demand, promote trade of goods, support the development of industrial and service zones, and effectively exploit the land fund on both sides of the road. This is considered an important boost for socio-economic development for the localities where the project passes through.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh, a resident of Tran Lieu ward, shared: “Going by boat is very difficult, especially on rainy and windy days when the water level is high. It takes time and is dangerous. We are excited because when the bridge is completed, people's travel will be safer and more convenient.”

The sturdy bridge is about to be completed connecting the two banks of Kinh Mon River, creating a synchronous and continuous traffic infrastructure system. With the goal of completing the traffic infrastructure, paving the way for comprehensive development, from the bridge projects connecting the region, contributing to creating new space for surrounding localities to develop breakthroughs.
