On November 4, US technology giant Nvidia and Germany's Deutsche Telekom announced plans to build a 1 billion euro (about 1.1 billion USD) artificial intelligence (AI) cloud computing center early next year.
The project will create a “secure and data -sovereign infrastructure” for European industrial development.
According to Deutsche Telekom, this “AI factory” will help businesses in Germany and Europe develop, train and apply AI in all production processes, from design to robotic automation, through a secure and sovereign information technology infrastructure.
The center is expected to be built in the southern German city of Munich and will be powered by thousands of Nvidia's advanced AI chips, expected to be operational from the first quarter of 2026.
At the project announcement ceremony in Berlin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that Germany's strong technical and industrial strength will be empowered by AI applications.
Under the cooperation framework, Deutsche Telekom - Germany's largest telecom operator - will provide the physical infrastructure, while software company SAP will take on the software platform and central operating AI technologies.
The announcement comes as Europe struggles to catch up with the US and China in the AI race, while raising concerns about “data sovereignty” to ensure citizens’ information is stored domestically instead of relying on foreign technology corporations./.
