3-star OCOP - "passport" helps Xuan Loc rice paper expand its market

The 3-star OCOP standard has truly elevated the brand "Banh da Ba 9" in Xuan Loc commune (Can Loc - Ha Tinh ), bringing the product to a new level and expanding the market.

For nearly 3 months now, since the product "Banh da Ba 9", of Mr. Le Quan Thuc's family (born 1993, Du Nai village, Xuan Loc commune, Can Loc district) was recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards, consumption has doubled, income has improved significantly.

Mr. Thuc shared: “My mother’s (Mrs. Chin) rice paper making profession started around 1980 and was maintained until she became old and weak. Back then, rice paper was made by hand, the flour was ground in a stone mortar and spread by hand. My mother’s carefulness from the stages of choosing ingredients to spices was the factor that helped rice paper maintain the number of customers at the rural market. We grew up thanks to my mother’s rice paper pot and also got up early with her to grind flour to spread rice paper. The thought of maintaining and developing my mother’s profession has always been in me since I was a child...”.

The rice paper production process is done by machine.

“In 2019, I decided to implement the idea of starting a business from my family's rice paper making business. My plan was supported by the local government because of the feasibility of the idea. The commune leaders met and agreed to support land lease procedures, organize study tours, visit some models, create conditions for producers to access preferential capital sources and support startups,” Mr. Thuc added.

Every day, the facility produces about 5,000 cakes.

With his own determination, the support of his family, relatives and local authorities, Mr. Thuc invested more than half a billion VND to build a 120 ^m2 factory, a drying yard of more than 300 ^m2 and purchased various types of machines (grinders, coating machines, baking machines, packaging machines, etc.). Initially, operating the machines also encountered many difficulties. To adjust the thickness, thinness and number of cakes in the production line, Mr. Thuc had to go through a process of exploring, researching and installing automatic sensors to improve the production process and reduce labor.

According to Mr. Thuc, the way to make rice paper is the same everywhere, only the flavor is different. Therefore, to have a quality product, the young boss boldly cooperated with rice and sesame producers right in Can Loc to ensure the quality of input materials. In addition to the family experience in the spice mixing process, Mr. Thuc also researched and learned more secrets to create a unique flavor for his products. Along with that, ensuring food hygiene and safety has also become a top factor in the production process.

From positive feedback from customers, “Banh da Ba 9” is becoming more and more known. Previously, the product was mainly consumed in small scale in the local market, but since achieving 3-star OCOP standards and being included in the group of OCOP products of the province, the number of customers has increased more and more, the production quantity has doubled compared to before. On average, each day, the factory produces about 5,000 pieces to supply the market of Thien Cam tourist area (Cam Xuyen), Huong Son, neighboring districts and Hanoi market.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh in Pho Chau town said: “I have imported rice paper from many places, but Ba 9 rice paper is very popular with customers. The cake is crispy, has a good taste, and has the aroma of black sesame mixed with other spices to create a difference. Now the cake has been recognized as meeting OCOP standards, so customers can rest assured about the quality and food hygiene and safety.”
