In an interview with ABC News on July 5th, President Biden explained his unconvincing performance in the debate against his opponent Donald Trump in late June. He also affirmed that he is still capable of serving America despite concerns about his health and mental acuity at the age of 81.
Biden said that the performance was "entirely my fault, not anyone else's," but stressed that it was simply an unfortunate day because he was exhausted and fatigued from a cold he caught on debate day. He insisted that the debate performance was not a sign that he had any serious symptoms.
Biden said he had "doctors monitoring me everywhere I went" and after the debate, they told him he was "exhausted" but nothing serious. "I'm constantly assessing what I'm doing. They don't hesitate to tell me if something is wrong," he said.
When asked directly whether he would be willing to take a cognitive test to prove to American voters that he is capable of leading the country, Biden said that he "takes a cognitive test every day."
"I have that test every single day. I'm not just campaigning, I'm running the world , and that's not an exaggeration," he said, emphasizing that the schedule of being president of the United States is a daily test of cognitive ability.
When asked if he was confident he could defeat Trump, Biden cited his past achievements to express his confidence. He also dismissed rumors that he would drop out of the race for the White House this year despite the pressure he was under. He said that only "God could make me quit."
Biden said he didn't believe the polls showing him trailing Trump in the popular vote, asserting that the race was a "boost" and that he was "the best fit to beat Trump."
