Biden and Trump pledge to have a smooth transition of power

Speaking as the two leaders sat by the fireplace in the Oval Office, President Biden congratulated Mr Trump on his victory and pledged to uphold tradition and ensure a smooth transition of power.

“As we have said, in the interest of a smooth transition, we will do everything we can to make sure you get the support you need,” Biden said.

For his part, President-elect Trump also affirmed that everything will be done smoothly and he appreciates those efforts.

According to White House Spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre, during the meeting at the White House, the incumbent President and the President-elect "discussed important issues of national security and domestic policy".

Ms Karine Jean-Pierre added that the meeting lasted about 2 hours and was "very sincere, polite and substantive".

Earlier, First Lady Jill Biden joined President Biden in welcoming President-elect Trump to the White House. She handed him a handwritten letter congratulating former First Lady Melania Trump, expressing her team's readiness to support the transition process.
