Urban agriculture - not just a trend, but an inevitable requirement
At the workshop “Urban Agriculture - Solutions for developing green spaces” organized by the Economic & Urban Newspaper in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City Biotechnology Center, experts stated that agricultural production in the heart of urban areas not only creates green spaces but also plays a role in improving the quality of life, livelihoods and environment for people.

The workshop "Urban Agriculture - Solutions for developing green spaces" was held between experts
Ho Chi Minh City now has many models such as rooftop gardens , hydroponics , and high-tech agriculture , which initially bring economic value and contribute to green space. However, the expansion of this space still faces many barriers.

Dr. Nguyen Hai An - Director of Ho Chi Minh City Biotechnology Center
Dr. Nguyen Hai An - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Biotechnology Center said that people's access to science and technology is still limited; access to policy mechanisms such as green credit still has legal barriers, so the process of converting to green production models has not reached the expected speed.
Need a supportive ecosystem: from policy to public awarenessTo create new momentum for urban agriculture after the merger, Ho Chi Minh City is recommended to need a synchronous support ecosystem - in which policy, training and market connection play a core role.
Ms. Tran Thi Nhu Phuong - Head of the Expert Board, Vietnam Agricultural Business Club proposed: "To support businesses and communities in transforming to a sustainable model, there should be conferences, training courses, and introductions of legal documents on green growth and circular economy, along with policies to support technical, financial, and connecting experts..."

From a planning perspective, Dr. Nguyen Hai An emphasized 3 pillars:
- Adjusting planning - redefining suitable agricultural production areas in the new planning of Ho Chi Minh City.
- Perfecting the mechanism - legal - access to land and finance - researching the establishment of a fund to support cooperatives and farmers to invest in production.
- Human resource training associated with application of scientific and technological advances .

The city needs new mechanisms, human resources and appropriate resources to expand this model.
Dr. Nguyen Dang Nghia - an agricultural expert added the organizational factor: "If you want to do urban agriculture, you have to build a value-added chain from production to consumption. Production must have businesses; households need to unite in groups, avoiding small scale."
From the professional agency side, Mr. Doan Van Chien - Head of the Southern Standing Office - National Agricultural Extension Center, said that the unit is implementing the "Urban Agriculture Club" to connect and share effective models between localities, aiming for a clean food network and sustainable green space.
Towards a long-term green strategy for Ho Chi Minh CityDeveloping urban agriculture not only contributes to expanding green space for a mega-city but also creates jobs, increases income and improves the living environment.

For the models to spread strongly, the City needs a synchronous, accessible and practical mechanism.
In the period when Ho Chi Minh City is reshaping its space after the merger, this is the time when stronger and more practical policies are needed, so that current green models are no longer isolated but become part of the sustainable urban development strategy.
If properly supported, urban agriculture will become an important “green lung”, contributing to building a greener and more sustainable Ho Chi Minh City in the future.
