Sustainable agricultural economic development

In 2025, the People's Committee of Thap Muoi commune will focus on implementing solutions to develop agricultural economy in the direction of high technology, forming a value chain of typical products, contributing to the development of sustainable agricultural economy.

Thap Muoi commune has key agricultural products: rice, lotus, and jackfruit. In addition, the commune also develops fruit trees and raises ducks and frogs, linked to a product consumption chain.

Vice Chairman of Thap Muoi Commune People's Committee Ngo Duy Phu (second from the left) visits and learns about the jackfruit cultivation model of a member of An Phat Multi-Service Cooperative.

According to the People's Committee of the commune, in addition to the advantages they possess, a segment of farmers in the commune still have a small-scale production mindset, relying on experience, and have not yet strongly shifted to a market-oriented agricultural economic mindset (production linked to the market, processing, and branding).

“To develop agriculture in a sustainable direction, the commune has identified one of the key tasks as renewing the thinking of agricultural economics for farmers; mobilizing farmers to link production, supporting the application of science and technology transfer in production, and guaranteeing product output to form a value chain for agricultural products” - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thap Muoi Commune Nguyen Thi Kim Thoai said.

The People's Committee of the commune focuses on promoting and encouraging people to switch to suitable crop and livestock structures; organizing training courses on "agricultural economic thinking," helping farmers shift from a mindset of doing agriculture to one of doing agricultural economics.

The plan aims to guide local people in producing key commodities such as rice, lotus, and gradually develop distinctive products for Thap Muoi commune. Simultaneously, it focuses on developing fruit trees such as jackfruit and durian, as well as raising ducks and frogs.

Along with that, strengthen and promote the role of 4 agricultural cooperatives and 3 Association models in the commune. Cooperatives and Associations become bridges to help farmers exchange and share experiences, apply science and technology in VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic farming to create high-quality agricultural products. Link businesses and supermarkets to purchase products for farmers to reduce risks in the market and prices, ensuring stable product output.

A typical example is the An Phát multi-service cooperative (My An 1 hamlet, Thap Muoi commune), which currently has 79 members.

The cooperative provides services such as: linking the buying and selling of organic fertilizer; buying and selling rice, purchasing paddy, rice, and commercial paddy; and providing fertilizer and pesticide spraying services.

Members of the cooperative mainly grow crops such as rice, jackfruit, and durian. The cooperative plays a role in supporting fertilizer supply, transferring scientific and technical knowledge, helping farmers reduce production costs and improve the quality of agricultural products.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ngan (58 years old), residing in My An 3 hamlet, Thap Muoi commune, was previously involved in farming and jackfruit cultivation. However, due to a lack of mastery of cultivation techniques, his jackfruit farming did not yield the desired results.

Over the past few years, Mr. Ngan has participated in the An Phat multi-service cooperative and received training in new techniques. Mr. Ngo Van Ngan shared: "I planted 12 acres of red and yellow-fleshed Thai jackfruit."

Currently, there are 6 hectares being harvested, sold once a week. Since joining the cooperative, I have learned techniques to prevent gummosis in jackfruit, and the cooperative has provided me with fertilizers and pesticides at low prices and linked me to jackfruit consumption. Thanks to that, I have reduced the cost of growing jackfruit, the quality of jackfruit is higher, the output is stable, contributing to increasing income and stabilizing family life."

Thanks to his participation in the An Phat multi-service cooperative, Mr. Nguyen Van Ngan, residing in My An 3 hamlet, Thap Muoi commune, has been able to apply many new techniques and grow higher quality jackfruit.

To date, the commune has 10 OCOP products that have achieved 3-4 star ratings, mostly processed products from lotus plants such as: lotus heart tea, butter-dried lotus seeds, jackfruit seed milk powder, clean duck eggs, pork sausage and grilled spring rolls...

The commune has established 12 planting area codes for crops such as jackfruit and rice, covering an area of over 1,200 hectares.

In 2025, the total rice cultivation area of the entire commune will be 13,354 hectares (including 6,892 hectares under production and product consumption linkage, reaching 101.35% of the plan), with a production output of over 92,000 tons.

The area for rice cultivation, fruit trees, vegetables, and livestock farming (including poultry and frogs) continues to expand, contributing to increased income and improved living standards for the people.

According to Nguyen Thi Kim Thoai, Chairwoman of the Thap Muoi Commune People's Committee: "The Commune People's Committee will continue to consolidate and develop new-style cooperatives that operate effectively, improve management capacity and the ability to link with businesses, considering cooperatives as the leading unit to organize large-scale farming and production according to standards."

Develop concentrated raw material areas, identify and delineate specialized production zones for key commodities (high-quality rice, lotus, aquatic products).

In addition, there is a focus on developing smart agriculture, organic agriculture, and sustainable agriculture, with an emphasis on promoting the application of Industry 4.0 technology in production management to build smart agriculture.

Focus on developing high-quality rice production and expanding the area of organic rice cultivation; apply circular economy models in agriculture. In addition, leverage the strengths of Dong Sen and other clean rice-growing areas to develop ecotourism and experiential tourism to promote agricultural tourism…”.
