Vietnamese swimmer in Top 11 notable athletes at SEA Games 2025

Singapore's Straitstimes recently published a list of the Top 11 athletes to watch at the 2025 SEA Games, which includes Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang.

The newspaper   Straitstimes   Writing about swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang: "Nguyen Huy Hoang is aiming to add to the 11 SEA Games gold medals he has won since his debut in 2017 and aims to defend his three gold medals in freestyle swimming in the 400m, 1500m, and 4x200m events in 2023. Expectations are even higher after Huy Hoang won the 800m and 1500m at the Asian Aquatics Championships held from September 28 to October 11."

According to the direction of the Vietnam Sports Administration, swimming continues to be one of the key sports of Vietnam at the 33rd SEA Games.

At this SEA Games, the Vietnamese swimming team has 16 athletes competing, with 11 male swimmers dominating the competition. They are also the hopes for gold medals in Vietnamese swimming.

After Anh Vien retired from competition, Huy Hoang became Vietnam's number one swimmer, having won 5 gold medals at the SEA Games and holding the Games record in the men's 400m freestyle with a time of 3 minutes 48 seconds 06 (SEA Games 31).

Nguyen Huy Hoang, born on July 10, 2000 in Quang Tri , is an outstanding Vietnamese swimmer specializing in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events. In 2013, at the age of 13, he won a gold medal at the National Youth Championships and was called up to the national youth team. In 2015, Hoang made a name for himself at the Southeast Asian Youth Championships with 5 gold medals and numerous records. He continued to assert his position by winning a gold medal in the 1500m freestyle at the 29th SEA Games (2017) and a silver medal at the 18th Asian Games (2018), before winning a gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. At the 30th SEA Games (2019), Hoang won a double gold medal in the 400m and 1500m freestyle events.

Besides Huy Hoang, other athletes mentioned by the Singaporean newspaper include Janjaem Suwannapheng (Thailand, Boxing), Sayu Bella (Indonesia, Mountain Biking), Hidilyn Diaz (Philippines, Weightlifting), Maximilian Maeder (Singapore, Kitesurfing), the pair Chen Tang Jie - Toh Ee Wei (Malaysia, Badminton), Pauk Sa (Myanmar, Billiards), Bovilak Thepphakan (Laos, Petanque), the brothers Basma - Walid Lachkar (Brunei, Wushu), and Felisberto de Deus (Timor-Leste, Athletics).
