At the intersection of the railway and Tran Dang Ninh Street in Tam Thanh Ward, the Ha Lang Railway Exploitation Branch has, for many years, maintained a level crossing guard station using sliding barriers on both sides to ensure safety. However, due to its location within the city center and high traffic density, it always poses a potential safety risk. From the end of November 2025, this intersection will be equipped with a sensor system to detect approaching trains, automatic barriers, and resurfacing on both sides of the tracks.
Ms. Doan Thi Hue, from Hoang Thuong block, Tam Thanh ward, shared: "Previously, every time a train arrived, the manual opening and closing of the barrier often caused congestion, and many people rushed across, which was very dangerous. The road surface on both sides of the tracks was also uneven and deteriorated, making travel difficult, especially when it rained. Since the comprehensive upgrade, the warning lights are brighter, the warning bells are clearer, and traffic flow is much smoother and safer."
Also among the intersections that have received investment, at Km 150+431 on Tran Phu Street, Ky Lua Ward, an automatic level crossing system has been installed. The new equipment helps shorten the time for opening and closing the barrier, ensuring safety for people and vehicles passing through.
Mr. Ta Duy Hien, Deputy Director of the Ha Lang Railway Exploitation Branch and Head of Dong Dang Station, said: Currently, on average, about 10 passenger and freight trains run through the Hanoi - Dong Dang line every day. Upgrading the signaling system helps us operate more safely and minimize the risk of accidents at level crossings.
Implementing Decision No. 1324, Lang Son province received investment for upgrading and repairing 17 level crossings with a total budget of approximately 10 billion VND. Of these, 100% of the locations were equipped with signal sensor systems, 4 locations had automatic barriers installed, and 13 locations had their barriers repaired or added. The project was implemented over 80 days (from September 11th to December 5th, 2025). To date, all items have been completed and put into operation.
Currently, the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line passing through the province is approximately 93 km long, with 28 level crossings of various types. The standardization of the signaling system is carried out according to the technical standards of the railway industry, ensuring compatibility with the national signaling network and synchronization with the train operation control system.
Mr. Hoang Viet Dong, Deputy Director of the Lang Son Department of Construction, commented: "The upgrading of railway signals is an important step in the maintenance and modernization of transportation infrastructure in the area. The implemented projects have contributed to improving operational capacity and minimizing the risk of accidents at level crossings between railways and roads."
To date, the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line passing through Lang Son province has 6 level crossings with automatic barriers and 18 level crossings equipped with automatic sensors. In the coming time, the province will continue to coordinate with the railway industry to review and propose the expansion and upgrading of some level crossings in the area, especially in urban areas with high traffic volume. Along with that, the installation of surveillance cameras and early warning devices at locations with potential safety risks will be considered for simultaneous implementation.
Upgrading the signaling system on the Hanoi - Dong Dang line not only helps minimize railway accidents but also represents a sustainable approach to modernizing transportation infrastructure. Once the signaling on each track is completed, train journeys through Lang Son will become increasingly safe and smooth, contributing to connecting economic regions across the country.
