Lunar New Year films are always a cultural product eagerly awaited by audiences every year. In particular, the use of historical settings and nostalgic elements is becoming increasingly common in most Vietnamese films released during the 2024 Lunar New Year.

The film, shown in theaters, aims for nostalgia.

Following two consecutive Lunar New Year films in the horror and psychological genres, " The House That Cannot Be Sold" and "The Ghost Child ," director Hoang Tuan Cuong introduces to audiences his 2024 Lunar New Year film project titled "Lighting Up," set in the 1990s and 2000s.

Through the film's promotional poster, the director aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia, tinged with the passage of time, with characters and props that remind people of the golden age of traditional Vietnamese opera troupes.

The film features a cast of veteran actors such as People's Artist Hong Van, Meritorious Artist Huu Chau, etc. Besides its touching story, the film also conveys the rich cultural characteristics of Southern Vietnam and incorporates many classic Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) excerpts.

Set in the 1990s, the film "Meeting My Pregnant Sister Again" revolves around the youthful years of young people passionate about film and acting.

Through the trailer, which is over 2 minutes long, director Nhat Trung has recreated famous locations such as: record stores, childhood snack shops; and means of transportation like the Cub 50 motorbike, buses… all familiar and evoking nostalgia.

Once-popular songs from the "Green Wave" era, along with singers of that time like Dan Truong, also appear in the film, evoking nostalgic memories of a vibrant youth for middle-aged viewers.

Director Nhat Trung stated that, over time, Lunar New Year films have undergone many changes in their production methods. Previously, films focused only on humorous and lighthearted content, but now, in addition to laughter, they also need to have depth, relatable content, and a clear message that touches the viewers' emotions.

However, since Lunar New Year films primarily revolve around family themes, it's difficult to innovate. Therefore, filmmakers aim for nostalgia to convey to viewers the traditional Lunar New Year scenes of the past, allowing audiences to reminisce about childhood experiences with their parents.

Following the box office success of "Mrs. Nu's House" in the 2023 Lunar New Year season, which grossed 475 billion VND, director and actor Tran Thanh has announced another Lunar New Year film this year titled "Mai" . The film is scheduled to premiere on February 10th (the first day of the Lunar New Year) in theaters nationwide.

Although not set in the 1990s like "Lighting Up" or " Meeting the Pregnant Woman Again ," the film "Mai" evokes a sense of nostalgia for the past through its main setting: the old An Binh apartment building with its unique architecture, reflecting the antique charm of bygone years.

The character Duong's house in the film has a classic style, while Mai's house has a skylight – a characteristic feature of large apartment buildings. In the film, Tran Thanh plays a character who is over 60 years old.

Although the film industry is facing many difficulties at this time, artists are still striving to ensure that audiences do not feel deprived of entertainment during the Lunar New Year.

In his role as director, Tran Thanh shared: “This is the project I have dedicated the most effort and passion to so far. I hope that the film Mai will be well-received by audiences not only domestically but also in other markets; and that it will be featured at international film festivals.”

Web series are highly anticipated by many viewers.

Besides theatrical releases, web dramas are also highly anticipated by many viewers during the Lunar New Year holiday. This year, kicking off the web drama series is " The Youngest Son, Cúc ," which will be released on Huỳnh Lập Official's YouTube channel at 8 PM on January 30th.

The film features well-known actors and artists from the South such as: Puka, Gin Tuan Kiet, Viet Huong, Dai Nghia, Le Khanh, Vo Tan Phat, Le Duong Bao Lam, Lam Vy Da, Le Nhan…

According to actor Huynh Lap, bringing audiences products filled with laughter but also imbued with humanistic meaning has always been one of the top priorities on his path in pursuing a career in the arts and entertainment industry.

The actor hopes that the audience will understand the many messages he wants to convey through the film and continue to love and support him through this film as well as many other projects in 2024.

The "race" for online films during Tet 2024 is heating up with the entry of a series of well-known artists, including many new names.

Specifically, " What's the Point of Tet ?" is a project co-produced by actress Ngoc Thanh Tam and director Neko Le. The film revolves around a hot topic of the year: livestreaming, with Ngoc Thanh Tam playing a sought-after "livestreaming queen".

However, after refusing to cooperate with the character played by Vo Tan Phat, she continuously gets into trouble. The film is receiving great anticipation after the success of the web series Thach Sanh Ly Thanh .

This is Ngoc Thanh Tam's first time producing a Lunar New Year film. The first episode premiered on February 1st on Ngoc Thanh Tam's YouTube channel, featuring a cast of well-known artists such as Le Giang, Dai Nghia, Vo Tan Phat, BB Tran, and others.

Similarly, the film " The Story of Tí's Family 3" has been shown on actor Minh Dự's YouTube channel since February 5th. Minh Dự's films always convey humanistic messages and evoke memories of Tet (Vietnamese New Year) of the past.

For this film project, he collaborates with a cast of veteran and familiar actors such as People's Artist Kim Xuân, Puka, Lạc Hoàng Long, Gia Bảo, etc.
