Cong Phuong once won the "Most Popular Player" award. |
After an 8-year hiatus, the "Most Popular Player" category has officially returned to the Vietnamese Golden Ball awards system, the most prestigious award in Vietnamese football, initiated and organized by Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper since 1995.
Starting today (December 10th), the online voting portal for "Most Popular Player" 2025 officially opens. Fans can participate in online voting. The voting period lasts until December 23rd, 2025, coinciding with the period when national teams compete at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.
The Vietnamese Golden Ball has long been considered a "benchmark" of Vietnamese football's professional standards, with a voting system based on the opinions of experts, coaches, and the media. Restoring the "Most Popular Player" category creates more space for fans to directly express their feelings, voices, and support for players, a factor that contributes to the enduring vitality of football.
This year's voting criteria have been expanded to include male and female players currently competing in the V.League, First Division, and futsal. This approach increases representativeness and opens up opportunities for dedicated players who rarely appear on professional rankings to still receive public recognition.
In 2017, when this category was first organized, the "Most Popular Player" award went to Nguyen Cong Phuong. The success of the poll at that time showed the immense appeal of an award that places fans' emotions at the center.
Beyond its symbolic significance, the 2025 voting campaign is also a large-scale interactive communication activity, reflecting the trend of combining sports and digital platforms. In the context of Vietnamese football entering a generational transition, the votes from the audience are not only meaningful but also a great source of encouragement for the players on their journey to prove themselves.
