The green farming movement on the rooftop has become an inevitable trend when the urbanization process is taking place strongly, contributing to bringing clean and safe food sources, creating green space for families and protecting the environment. After retiring, Mr. Le Quang Trung (Thanh Khe Tay ward, Thanh Khe district) invested more than 10 million VND in an automatic irrigation system to grow vegetables and fruit trees on the rooftop. In addition to using it in his family, Mr. Trung sells it to local people at a price of 35,000-50,000 VND/kg. Similarly, Mr. Pham Thanh Long (Hoa Cuong Nam ward, Hai Chau district) uses 100m2 of his rooftop to grow a vegetable garden and fruit trees. He was instructed by the Ward Farmers' Association on how to make organic microbial fertilizer to fertilize, helping plants grow well, contributing to protecting the environment.
According to Nguyen Kim Dung, Permanent Vice President of the City Farmers' Association, rooftop agriculture is currently spreading to many localities in the city. To support members, the association coordinates with the City's Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center to provide training on vegetable and ornamental plant growing, give away seedlings, fertilizers, and support trellis and irrigation systems. In the coming time, the association will continue to encourage the above model, moving towards forming branches of the green vegetable farming association.
Many effective urban agricultural models are supported by the Farmers' Association of Cam Le district, contributing to increasing income and stabilizing the lives of members. A typical example is Mr. Dao Huy Tung (Hoa Tho Tay ward) with a high-tech straw mushroom growing model. Previously, he encountered difficulties due to lack of capital, techniques and output for the product. Since joining the association, he has been supported to borrow 700m² of land, borrow preferential capital from the Farmers' Support Fund, participate in training on planting techniques and be connected to output. Thanks to that, the model operates effectively, bringing in an income of about 40 million VND/month. In 2022, he established the Hoa Tho Tay High-Tech Mushroom Cooperative with 7 members, with an average income of 15 million VND/person/month.
Similarly, the hydroponic vegetable growing model of Mr. Ho Nhu Lieu ( Hoa Phat ward) is typical in the development of urban agriculture in Cam Le district. Coming from a poor family, after working abroad and accumulating experience, he returned home to invest in a hydroponic vegetable growing model on 300m2 of land. His clean vegetable products were quickly trusted by people, markets and agricultural stores. When expanding production, he encountered difficulties with land and capital, but the association supported him with a loan of 1,200m2 of land, preferential loans, technical training and output connections. Currently, he harvests over 200 kg of vegetables per day, with a revenue of 6 million VND.
According to the Farmers' Association of Cam Le District, on average, each year, the district has more than 600 member households achieving the title of good farmers and businessmen at all levels. In particular, the association plays an important role in accompanying, supporting, and creating favorable conditions for members to strive to improve. In addition to consulting, capital and technical support, the association promotes training and capacity building for professional association branches and farmer members. In particular, it strengthens promotion, advertising, and building of brands and trademarks, helping members improve product quality and connect to consumer markets, contributing to helping farmers develop the economy and stabilize their lives.
In 2024, the association at all levels will establish 5 cooperatives, 23 cooperative groups, 50 professional farmer associations and 24 professional farmer branches; organize more than 100 training courses, coaching, and knowledge and skills development for 4,838 people, helping members link up to develop production, contributing to economic development in localities. According to Chairman of the City Farmers' Association Nguyen Huu Thiet, to support farmers in developing economic models, the association coordinates with vocational training units, transfers technical advances, and encourages members to develop agriculture in a circular direction and adapt to climate change. Along with that, the association increases support for members to borrow capital, promote products, and connect consumption through direct channels and e-commerce. In particular, training and capacity building for grassroots association officials continue to receive attention, contributing to promoting operational efficiency, building an increasingly strong association, and truly being a reliable support for farmers.
