Storks trapped in traps were removed by forces in Phu Loc commune and released back into the wild.

Recurs annually

Recently, the police force of Phu Loc commune coordinated with forest rangers and related forces to ambush and caught red-handed two subjects residing in Trung Phuoc Tuong village hunting storks in the fields of Hoa Mau and Trung Phuoc Tuong villages. The seized evidence included many stork traps, fake storks, 1 motorbike and 2 boats used by the subjects to move and carry out the act of hunting wild birds. Immediately after arresting the subjects, the functional forces collected hundreds of fake storks and stork traps scattered in the fields, in order to completely prevent the situation of trapping wild birds in the area. In addition, the functional agencies also investigated, clarified the case, and handled it according to the provisions of the law.

The deployment of troops to ambush and arrest subjects who have been trapping storks in the fields of the area is considered a drastic move when the hunting of wild birds has recently become a painful situation. From the beginning of September 2025 until now, in the flooded fields in the southern area of Hue city, flocks of birds and storks often appear to find food. In particular, the areas of Phu Loc, Hung Loc, Vinh Loc, Loc An and Chan May - Lang Co communes are where wild birds often appear, so these areas are also "hot spots" for the situation of trapping wild birds. In many fields after the harvest season, nets stretched across the sky with fake storks and wild bird trapping tools of the hunters appear more and more.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, a resident of Phu Loc commune, although this problem has been handled by many authorities, the hunting of wild birds continues every year. Those who trap storks use long bamboo poles driven deep into the ground, then spread nets on these poles. They create fake foam storks and turn on the machine that makes bird sounds to attract flocks of storks to fly to and wait to be caught in the net trap. They usually set the traps in the early morning or late afternoon.

Request to sign a commitment

In fact, the functional forces and local authorities have continuously organized propaganda and mobilized forces to dismantle and destroy wild bird traps, but the above situation still recurs. The representative of the leader of Chan May - Lang Co commune said: In the past 2 months, the forces have coordinated and deployed many campaigns to detect and prevent wild bird hunting. In particular, there was a campaign in which the Southern Forest Protection Department of the city coordinated with the People's Committee of the commune with many forces and the Chan May Port Border Guard Station to dismantle and destroy on the spot 450 foam storks and 6,200 plastic sticks - tools used to make stork traps.

Mr. Phan Viet Phuc, Head of the Forest Protection Department in the southern area of Hue city, informed: In just a short period of time, the forest rangers, in coordination with units and local authorities of communes, have conducted 10 raids and dismantled wild animal traps, especially traps for hunting storks; in which 6,360 foam storks, 41,250 plastic sticks, 27 clamp traps, 3,000m of nets were dismantled and destroyed, 2 sound amplifiers used to commit violations and means used for hunting wild birds were temporarily seized. "Wild bird hunting is a serious problem and the viewpoint of the forest rangers in the coming time is to maintain and further strengthen coordination with local authorities and organizations to have more drastic solutions to end this situation", Mr. Phuc affirmed.

Chairman of Phu Loc Commune People's Committee - Mr. Nguyen Van Hiep said: Recently, the leaders of the Commune People's Committee have requested functional units to obtain a list of people involved in "hunting" wild birds; the Commune Police force invited cases of setting stork traps to work, asked for a commitment not to re-offend and strictly handled according to the law for cases of intentional violations. In addition, the Police force directly went to the houses of subjects with means to carry out acts of hunting and exterminating wild birds to make a record for handling. The locality called on local people to raise awareness, absolutely not to use bird and stork traps to join hands in protecting the natural environment and ecological environment, and at the same time required villages to attach responsibility. "We will continue to deploy many inspection campaigns, strictly handle violations, and at the same time strengthen propaganda work, mobilize people to join hands in protecting the environment and preserving green - clean - beautiful rural landscapes", Mr. Hiep emphasized.
