Da Nang city's fish sauce products receive a certificate of protection for the geographical indication "Nam O"

The traditional fish sauce profession has a great significance for the spiritual life of the people of Hoa Hiep Nam and Hoa Hiep Bac wards, Lien Chieu district, Da Nang city. The fish sauce profession not only aims to preserve traditional values ​​and cultural identity of the nation but also contributes to promoting economic development and tourism activities, creating a driving force for local socio-economic development.

Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi and Deputy Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology Tran Le Hong awarded the certificate of protection of geographical indication "Nam O" for fish sauce products of Da Nang city to the leaders of Lien Chieu District People's Committee.

Five years ago, the Nam O fish sauce making craft was officially recognized by the State as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. This is an honor, pride and recognition of the great contribution of the Party Committee, government and people of Lien Chieu district and Da Nang city in the work of protecting, preserving and promoting the cultural and historical values ​​of the nation.

To preserve and promote the value of heritage and develop the traditional craft village of Nam O fish sauce, Lien Chieu district and Da Nang city have made constant efforts in researching solutions and supporting the craft village.

The task of "Registering, managing and developing geographical indications for Nam O fish sauce products of Da Nang city" under the National Intellectual Property Development Program has been approved by the Minister of Science and Technology and officially implemented since 2022. After nearly 2 years of implementation, the geographical indication "Nam O" for fish sauce products of Da Nang city has been granted a protection certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property according to Decision No. 437/QD-SHTT dated June 3, 2024 of the Department of Intellectual Property, this is the first geographical indication of Da Nang city.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi said that the geographical indication "Nam O" for protected fish sauce products will be an important legal basis for traditional Nam O fish sauce production and trading establishments to enhance their reputation, develop the market, protect the value of quality and origin of traditional fish sauce products with a history of hundreds of years, enhance competitiveness, and create conditions for traditional fish sauce products to be widely consumed in the domestic market and for export.

The certificate of protection of geographical indication "Nam O" for fish sauce products has an important meaning for the Nam O Fish Sauce Traditional Craft Village Association in building a solid position in the market for sustainable development.

“Geographical indications are community assets, the value of products needs to be built by the community and the role of the community in the process of developing geographical indications is very important. Therefore, businesses, production facilities, and members of craft village associations need to enhance their sense of responsibility, make commitments to ensure product quality and standards in order to maintain the reputation and unique quality of the products and together build, develop and protect the Nam O fish sauce brand of the city with traditional values ​​and hundreds of years of history”, Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi emphasized.

On behalf of the city leaders, congratulating the Nam O Fish Sauce Traditional Craft Village Association on their fish sauce products that have been protected by geographical indication, Vice President Nguyen Thi Anh Thi expressed hope that the geographical indication "Nam O" will promote its value after being protected by the State, contributing to supporting the people of Nam O fish sauce craft village to develop traditional production to the market effectively and sustainably, contributing to improving the lives of local people.
