At the meeting to introduce and provide information about the program "National E-commerce Week and Vietnam Online Shopping Day - Online Friday 2025" on the afternoon of November 4, Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) said that by 2024, the total value of e-commerce transactions in Southeast Asia will exceed 100 billion USD.
In Vietnam alone, e-commerce retail sales reached 25 billion USD. Vietnam is the fastest growing market in the region, in the top 10 countries with the highest e-commerce growth rate in the world and ranked 3rd in scale, just behind Indonesia and Thailand, with more than 60 million people participating in online shopping.
However, Ms. Viet Anh said that the biggest barrier for consumers when shopping online today is the worry about product quality not being as advertised, and the situation of poor quality goods, fake goods, counterfeit goods or misdescribed goods is still common.
“Therefore, there needs to be more synchronous and appropriate solutions to build a transparent and safe business environment, protect the rights of consumers and reputable businesses in the market,” she said.

The leader of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy said that Online Friday 2025 will focus on building a comprehensive connection ecosystem, strengthening the connection between businesses and consumers. The program aims to improve the online shopping experience, promote electronic payments, prevent counterfeit goods, and support businesses in digital transformation, promote local products, genuine goods and promote online exports.
From the perspective of protecting consumer rights, Ms. Nguyen Quynh Anh - Vice Chairman of the National Competition Commission (Ministry of Industry and Trade) - said that in the past, when talking about consumers, society often considered them as beneficiaries, paying little attention to how they were protected.
According to her, the increasing number of people participating in online shopping programs such as Online Friday shows that Vietnamese consumers have gradually adapted to online shopping. However, they are still at a disadvantage because they cannot fully grasp information about products or suppliers.

Ms. Nguyen Quynh Anh, Vice President of the National Competition Commission (Ministry of Industry and Trade) shares about consumer rights and the responsibilities of KOLs and KOCs when livestreaming to sell products (Photo: Idea).
"If businesses or celebrities, KOLs (key opinion leaders), KOCs (consumer influencers) provide incomplete or misleading information, consumers have no basis to make accurate and intelligent decisions," she said.
She said the Law on Consumer Protection, which will take effect from July 1, 2024, for the first time clearly stipulates the responsibilities of celebrities when participating in business activities or promoting products. Accordingly, they must provide truthful and complete information about the uses, quality, quantity, expiry date and related factors.
In cases where celebrities both run a business and directly promote or test products, they are responsible for the authenticity of the media content.
“In addition, if celebrities are hired by businesses or platforms to advertise, they have a responsibility to be transparent with consumers that this is a paid activity. At the same time, they need to require the seller to provide clear information before communicating it to the public,” she said.
The National E-commerce Week 2025 will take place from November 13 to 17, hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. During this time, participating businesses are allowed to apply promotional discounts of up to 100% of the value of goods and services.
The highlight of this year’s program is the “mega live” session organized by the organizers, which aims to visually demonstrate and guide consumers on how to distinguish genuine and fake products. This activity aims to raise awareness and skills in identifying genuine products, contributing to building a safe and transparent online shopping environment.
