Yesterday (January 7), Beijing confirmed for the first time that Chinese President Xi Jinping contacted US President-elect Donald Trump after the 2024 US election results.

Donald Trump expressed optimism about his relationship with Xi Jinping after returning to the White House.

The information was confirmed by China a day after Donald Trump told US radio host Hugh Hewitt on January 6 that he and Xi Jinping had spoken through representatives, and expressed optimism about their relationship after he returned to the White House on January 20.

Responding to a request for comment from the press on Mr. Trump's remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on January 7 that Beijing "attaches importance" to the remarks of the US President-elect.

"China and the US maintain communication through various channels," the South China Morning Post quoted the spokesman as saying.

"China is willing to work with the United States according to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation to promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of China-US relations for the benefit of both sides and the world," Guo said.

Previously, Mr. Trump said that he had contacted the Chinese leader after being elected on November 5, 2024.

However, until today, Beijing has never confirmed any "underground" diplomatic channels with Mr. Trump, except for a congratulatory message to the President-elect after his victory in the 2024 US election.

Spokesperson Guo said that economic and trade cooperation between the US and China is essentially beneficial to both sides. This was the answer to Mr. Trump's accusation on January 6 that "China is depriving the US of trillions of dollars every year."
