This is not only a competition, but also an opportunity to practice survival skills and coordination for students of Ho Chi Minh City National University dormitory.
According to Mr. Tran Viet Thang - Deputy Director of the Center for Dormitory and Urban Area Management of Ho Chi Minh City National University, all preparations for the sports festival were started six months ago, including large-scale training sessions with the participation of specialized fire trucks.
“The goal of the sports festival is not only to compete but also to help students, civil servants and workers master the skills to handle real fire and explosion situations,” Mr. Thang shared.

La Quang Ninh, a fourth-year student at the University of Natural Sciences , said: "The practical part was quite difficult because many pipes and cylinders had to be assembled together. If just one joint was out of place, the water would not flow properly and you would lose immediately."
Ninh’s team of 5 people practiced regularly for 3 weeks, 3 sessions per week. Thanks to the guidance of the seniors at the cluster, they entered the competition field with the mindset of “doing it like it was a real fire”. That helped the team complete the test coherently and quickly, without a moment of confusion.
In addition, in the practical exam for women, you need to run 100m to put out a fire and save people and property. Le Thao Huyen, a fourth-year student at the University of Technology, was assigned the task of holding a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. This is a seemingly simple operation but full of pressure when standing in front of a real fire model.
“I only practiced two sessions. I was scared, but when I pulled the trigger and saw the fire go out, I knew I had just learned something that could help save others or myself,” Huyen confided.

During the training session parallel to the sports festival, Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Quoc Viet, Deputy Captain of the Fire Fighting and Rescue Team of Area 33 (Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police), listed 10 shortcomings that students in the dormitory of Ho Chi Minh City National University often commit.
Many students still make common mistakes such as overloading the power supply, cooking in the room, charging the battery overnight, arbitrarily connecting the power cord or smoking in the room... these seemingly simple behaviors pose a very high risk of fire and explosion.
Mr. Viet emphasized that everyone needs to master the skills of using fire extinguishers and know the rules of escape on high floors such as absolutely not using the elevator, not returning to the room to get property, bending low when moving, if isolated, block the door and go to the window to shout, when clothes catch fire, roll to put out the fire on the body.
