The doping ban is gradually closing the door on football, but athletics is not yet guaranteed to open the door for Mudryk either. |
Mykhailo Mudryk, Chelsea's most expensive signing in history, is facing an uncertain future following a suspension for doping allegations. Amidst this, rumors have emerged that the 24-year-old midfielder is considering a move to athletics, with ambitions to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
According to Marca , Mudryk has begun training with the Ukrainian athletics team, even working with former Olympic athletes to prepare for his goal of becoming a professional sprinter. The source further emphasized: "The road to the Olympics is not easy. Mudryk must meet the minimum qualifying standards of the International Athletics Federation and pass the national selection by 2027."
Following a wave of rumors, the Ukrainian Athletics Federation (UAF) officially responded. Speaking to Dynamo.Kyiv.Ua, Olha Nikolaiyenko, press secretary of the UAF, affirmed: "We have not received any requests from Mudryk."
When asked whether the Chelsea player joining the national athletics team was possible, she replied emphatically: "While the investigation into Mudryk's doping allegations is still ongoing, this cannot and will not be a topic for discussion."
The Federation's president, Olga Saladukha, also denied the rumors to the media: "Mudryk has not trained with the national athletics team, and we have never had any discussions about him switching to athletics."
Mudryk stunned Chelsea fans by reaching a speed of 36.63 km/h in his Premier League debut in January 2023. He hasn't played for Chelsea since their Europa Conference League match against Heidenheim in November 2024.
