On January 13th, information from the Ministry of National Defense indicated that General Phan Van Giang, Minister of National Defense, had signed Decision No. 129A/QD-BQP awarding a commendation to Major Do Tien Duc, Squadron Commander of Squadron 1, Regiment 929, Division 372, Air Defense - Air Force Command, for his calm and resourceful handling of an unforeseen situation in the air, minimizing damage to people's lives and property. Prior to this, the Minister of National Defense had decided to promote pilot Do Tien Duc from Captain to Major.
On January 9th, while carrying out a training plan of the 929th Regiment, Major Do Tien Duc was assigned to pilot Su-22M4 aircraft number 5880 for a training flight. Upon completing the mission and returning to the airfield, the aircraft experienced a technical malfunction and was unable to land safely. Major Do Tien Duc reported to his flight commander and received orders to parachute out.
