In general, the live hog market on April 17 showed a clear differentiation between regions. The North maintained a stable state with a few bright spots of slight increases. The Central and Central Highlands regions were also relatively stable at different price levels. Notably, the South showed signs of improvement with some localities recording slight increases, suggesting that there may be separate market factors affecting each region.
People cautiously restore herds despite rising pork prices
The continuous increase in live pig prices has brought a large source of income to pig farmers in Yen Bai. However, despite the high price of pigs, most pig farmers are still cautious in restocking their herds, due to concerns about the disease and high feed prices, as well as the uncertainty of pig prices, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
Mr. Lai Van Toan's family in Ban Lom village, Hanh Son commune, Nghia Lo town, Yen Bai province has 20 years of experience raising pigs. Every year, his family maintains a herd of 30-35 pigs. The current high price of pigs has helped his family earn more income, reduce financial burden and create resources to continue to develop, expand and increase the size of the farm.
However, Mr. Toan is very cautious in expanding and repopulating the pig herd because with the high price of pigs, many families may rush to repopulate, leading to a sharp increase in feed prices, a risk of a decrease in the price of pigs sold for slaughter, and a return of disease.
Currently, Nghia Lo town has a total herd of over 30,000 pigs, with the output of all kinds of live pigs reaching over 1,1500 tons. In recent days, the price of live pigs has increased by 5-10% compared to the same period last year, reaching 70,000 - 74,000 VND/kg. This is the highest price in many years. However, most farmers are still cautious in restocking pigs, due to concerns about the stability of the price of pigs for sale, as well as diseases and high prices of pig feed.
