In early September, the UK Ministry of Defense announced that the UK would supply Ukraine with 650 Martlet Light Multi-Role Missiles (LMM) worth £162 million ($213 million). The first shipment is expected to arrive by the end of this year.
Speaking to Izvestia, Russian military analyst Vadim Mingalev said that the Martlet missiles that Britain has provided to Ukraine are significantly inferior to other types of air defense missiles provided by the West. However, Mingalev warned that these missiles could disrupt Russian aviation to some extent.
“Such missiles are quite outdated. They will not be enough to save Ukraine’s air defense system. At the moment, they are clearly inferior to the S-300, S-400 and S-500 systems. However, they can still cause some trouble for our aviation,” said Mingalev.

The Martlet lightweight multi-role missile was developed by Thales. It was originally designed for use on the Royal Navy's AW159 Wildcat helicopters, but continued development. The Martlet missile officially entered service in 2020 after some delays and was first deployed in combat in 2021.
The Martlet lightweight multi-role missile is designed to perform air-to-surface, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missions.
The Martlet lightweight multi-role missile features a lightweight design, weighing only 13 kg, and a multi-mode guidance system, including laser and semi-active laser guidance. It also has the ability to seek targets using infrared in the terminal phase. The Martlet missile can reach speeds of up to Mach 1.5 and a range of up to 8 km.
The Martlet lightweight multi-role missile can be deployed on a variety of platforms such as helicopters, naval vessels and unmanned aerial vehicles. It can also be used to attack a variety of targets, including drones, small boats and lightly armored vehicles.

Several variants of the Martlet have been developed for different applications. The standard version of the lightweight multi-role Martlet missile is designed to perform air-to-ground, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missions.
The Martlet missile's flexibility also allows for potential upgrades, such as different warheads and guidance systems, to suit a variety of operational needs.
