"The Nahid-2 communications satellite was launched from Russia's Vostochny spaceport using a Soyuz rocket" - AFP news agency quoted information from Iran's National Television.

The Nahid-2 satellite weighs 110 kg and was designed and built by Iranian engineers.

Besides Nahid-2, there are also satellites from other countries. According to Tass news agency, the Soyuz-2.1b rocket carried into space the Ionosfera-M satellites No. 3 and No. 4, along with 18 satellites produced by Russia and other countries.

According to Space.com , everything went smoothly during the initial stages of the launch, which was live-streamed by the Russian space agency Roscosmos. The broadcast ended about 10 minutes after launch.

Soyuz rockets have previously launched several Iranian satellites into space, including Khayyam, Pars-1 and Hodhod.

Nahid-2 is designed to remain in orbit for five years.

The West has long expressed concerns that technological advances in Iran's space program could be used to upgrade its ballistic missile arsenal.

News of the launch came ahead of nuclear talks between Iran and Britain, France and Germany in Istanbul, after Iran fought a 12-day war with Israel last month.

Last September, Iran said it had successfully launched the Chamran-1 research satellite into orbit, using the Ghaem-100 rocket, developed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' space force .
