Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Director General of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), announced the move on November 12 after attending a meeting with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok.
The main focus of the meeting was to address security concerns and ensure the quality of services provided to tourists during their stay in Thailand.
To achieve these goals, TAT and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports need to coordinate with the Director General of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Tourist Police, Ms. Thapanee said.
Discussions on deploying Chinese police to patrol major tourist cities in Thailand are expected to be held with the Chinese embassy in Bangkok on November 15.
The initiative is expected to help Thailand reach its target of welcoming 4.4 million Chinese tourists in the last two months of this year. It is not yet clear which cities Thailand will allow Chinese police to deploy to.
“Having Chinese police in Thailand is necessary because it will help Chinese tourists see that Thailand is strengthening security measures. In addition, tourists’ confidence will be enhanced if their police can confirm that Thailand is safe,” Ms. Thapanee said.
The number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand has slowed after a 14-year-old boy recently opened fire at a Bangkok shopping mall, killing one Chinese tourist and wounding another.
