The predominantly German-speaking city, situated on the banks of the Rhine River and bordering France and Germany, won the right to host Eurovision 2025 in a close "two-horse" race with Geneva.
According to Swiss media, the city of Basel and the St. Jakobshalle arena were chosen because of their suitable location, good facilities, convenient transport links, and experience in organizing large events.
Basel has announced it will propose to the city's legislature a budget of 34.9 million Swiss francs (approximately $41.2 million) for preparations to host Eurovision next year. The city expects the highly anticipated event to boost tourism and generate 60 million Swiss francs in revenue.
Eurovision, established in 1956, is an annual competition held among countries belonging to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Eurovision brings together singers from over 50 countries, including two special guests: Israel and Australia.
Each year, Eurovision attracts nearly 200 million viewers on television and the internet. The winners of the Eurovision competition are selected by a panel of music industry experts from each country and members of the public.
This year's competition in Malmö, Sweden, attracted over 160 million television viewers and more than 80 million YouTube users worldwide .
Swiss singer Nemo won with his song "The Code," securing Switzerland the right to host the competition in 2025.
