The predominantly German-speaking city, which sits on the Rhine and borders France and Germany, won the right to host Eurovision 2025 in a tight two-horse race with Geneva.
According to Swiss media, the city of Basel and the St. Jakobshalle arena were chosen because of their suitable location, good facilities, convenient transport connections and experience in organizing major events.
Basel said it would ask the city legislature to allocate 34.9 million Swiss francs (about $41.2 million) to prepare for hosting Eurovision next year. The city hopes the highly anticipated event will boost tourism and generate 60 million Swiss francs in revenue.
Eurovision was founded in 1956 and is held annually among countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Eurovision brings together singers from more than 50 countries, including two special guests, Israel and Australia.
Every year, Eurovision attracts nearly 200 million viewers on television and the Internet. The winners of the Eurovision contest are chosen by a panel of music industry experts from each country and members of the public.
This year's competition in the Swedish city of Malmö attracted more than 160 million television viewers and more than 80 million YouTube users worldwide .
Swiss singer Nemo won with the song "The Code", helping Switzerland win the right to host the contest in 2025./.
