In 2023, although still in the poor household standard, Ms. Nguyen Cam Tien, in area 6, Nga Bay ward, voluntarily asked to return her poor household book. Some people said she was... "pretentious", but for Ms. Tien, if she could rise out of poverty, she would not rely on it, so she would give the support of the Party and State to more special circumstances.

To escape poverty, in addition to working for hire at restaurants and gardening, Ms. Tien uses the land around her house to grow some vegetables to sell every day. Thanks to her diligence, she has a daily income from her small vegetable garden, and her life gradually stabilizes. At the end of last year, Ms. Tien officially escaped poverty.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Van Khai, in area 6, Vi Tan ward, is determined to escape poverty in 2025. In recent years, he has raised fish and grown vegetables, bringing in a relatively good income. Recently, the local government has supported Mr. Khai with a charity house, which is an opportunity for his family to escape poverty sustainably. Mr. Khai shared: "The State has supported housing, along with many other policies, I have to try to do business, strive to escape poverty by the end of the year, I cannot rely on or wait forever on the State."

The story of people being aware and proactive in escaping poverty is clear evidence of changes in awareness and thinking of "insiders" and the support and companionship in poverty reduction of the locality.

Working together to reduce poverty

After the merger, although the area is larger and there is more work, the communes and wards in Can Tho city have proactively reviewed poor and near-poor households, fully implemented policies, did not interrupt tasks, and were determined to reduce the poverty rate.

Phung Hiep commune still has 111 poor households, accounting for 1.65% and 797 near-poor households, accounting for 11.87%. To reduce the poverty rate by 1% this year, the locality has developed a specific poverty reduction plan. According to Ms. Do Thi Ngoc Truc, Vice Chairman of Phung Hiep Commune People's Committee: After the merger, the commune has reviewed poor and near-poor households in the two old communes of Hoa My and Phung Hiep, assessed the current situation of each household to develop a poverty reduction plan. The locality continues to maintain effective poverty reduction models, assigning organizations and Party cells to accompany and guide poor and near-poor households to implement appropriate models and ways of doing business.

Propaganda work to arouse the aspirations of the poor is regularly carried out by local Party committees and authorities. Mr. Luu Van Du, Vice Chairman of Vi Tan Ward People's Committee, said: "Good propaganda helps people change their awareness, proactively rise up, and be determined to escape poverty. The locality always accompanies and seeks models and methods suitable to the reality of each family."

Through review, Can Tho City still has 7,745 poor households, accounting for 0.85% and 28,314 near-poor households, accounting for 3.11%. The locality strives to reduce the poverty rate to 0.63% by the end of this year.
