This morning, October 10th, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam , the National Assembly, the President, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and the city of Hanoi solemnly organized the national-level commemoration ceremony for the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024).
This is the most significant event in the series of activities commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi, a memorable milestone in the journey of building and developing the heroic capital of heroic Vietnam.
Speaking at the commemoration ceremony, Comrade Nguyen Thu, a veteran from Hai Ba Trung district and former officer of Regiment 102 - Capital Regiment, Division 308 - Vanguard Army Division, emotionally shared: "Remembering October 10, 1954, the day we returned to take over Hanoi , my heart overflows with memories. At that time, I was just 22 years old, full of aspirations and youthful enthusiasm, a platoon leader in the infantry of the Capital Regiment, Division 308 of the Vanguard Army."

Comrade Nguyen Thu shared: "Currently, I am 92 years old, but the glorious historical moments of the past are always present in my mind, especially the courage and resilience of the soldiers who fought valiantly, sparing no blood or sacrifice during the 60 days and nights of defending Hanoi, ensuring the safe and ingenious retreat of our troops across the Red River to the Viet Bac War Zone, carrying out the protracted resistance war."
In his speech, Comrade Nguyen Thu stated that he and the soldiers of the 308th Division were assigned the task of taking over the beloved capital city. Everyone was excited, nostalgic, and deeply moved. On the way back, the 308th Division held a victory celebration at Trai Co area, Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang province. People from the liberated areas and enemy-occupied areas of Bac Ninh, Hanoi, and Phuc Yen enthusiastically came out to welcome the victorious army.

"At that time, each of us soldiers was presented with a 'Dien Bien Phu Victory Badge' by President Ho Chi Minh. It was truly an honor and a source of immense pride. We all cherished and treasured the badge, pinning it to our chests, close to our hearts, considering it a priceless memento, to be preserved for life and passed down to future generations," Comrade Nguyen Thu shared.
On the morning of October 10, 1954, the 308th Division, commanded by Major General Vuong Thua Vu, divided into several large columns and launched an offensive to take over the capital. Hundreds of thousands of people enthusiastically poured into the streets, dressed in their finest clothes, carrying flags and flowers, joyfully and proudly singing to welcome the victorious army. That glorious historical moment will forever remain etched in the hearts of every Hanoi resident.
The day the capital was liberated not only became a symbol of unity, patriotism, national pride, and unwavering faith in the bright future of the country, but also a glorious continuation of the thousand-year-old cultural and heroic tradition of Thang Long - Hanoi.
"Looking back after 70 years, we, the soldiers of yesteryear, are extremely proud and excited by the dramatic changes in the capital and the country. The people live in peace and happiness, and their lives are becoming increasingly prosperous. We always bear in mind: as soldiers of the Capital Regiment, as soldiers of Dien Bien Phu, as veterans, we will always uphold the revolutionary tradition, maintain the fine qualities of 'Uncle Ho's soldiers,' be exemplary in our lifestyle, abide by and implement the Party's guidelines and policies, and the State's laws; constantly study and follow Ho Chi Minh's thought, morality, and style. Actively participate in local movements, contributing to building a stronger, more civilized, and progressive capital and country," Comrade Nguyen Thu said emotionally.

Comrade Nguyen Thu addressed today's young generation: "To have the beautiful life we have today, previous generations went through countless difficulties and sacrificed their lives and blood to win independence and freedom. You must always remember the words of our beloved Uncle Ho: 'Whether the Vietnamese nation becomes beautiful and prosperous, whether the Vietnamese people can reach the pinnacle of glory to stand shoulder to shoulder with the great powers of the world, depends largely on your studies.' From this, you should cherish, value, and strive to study, work, and contribute, determined to uphold the independence and sovereignty of the Fatherland, and build a more prosperous and happy homeland."
