Heavy rain in Hanoi, many people stuck in the middle of the water

VietNamNetVietNamNet31/07/2023

At 2:30 PM, after several tens of minutes of rain, Do Duc Duc Street (Nam Tu Liem District) was deeply flooded. Many people riding motorbikes had to dismount and walk.

In many sections, the water was so deep it covered the wheels, and some young people tried to speed through on their motorbikes.

Smaller roads near the Pham Hung and Me Tri areas were also affected. Many motorcyclists speeding against the flow of traffic created waves that splashed onto the sidewalks on either side.

Rising water levels on major roads have caused difficulties for many buses.

Even in the shallowest areas, the water only covers half of the motorbike wheels, leaving women with less driving skills with no choice but to jump off and walk.

In Quan Nhan Street (Thanh Xuan District), although the rain stopped a long time ago, the water level has not receded significantly. Residents say that because the sewers in the Vu Trong Phung Street area have been temporarily closed, the water there is not draining quickly.

In alley 90 of Chinh Kinh Street and other streets such as Quan Nhan and Nguyen Tuan (Thanh Xuan district), water flooded into the alleys, inundating residential areas.

Many houses along the street have had iron or wooden panels installed by residents to prevent water from flooding in.

Viet Anh (from Luong The Vinh Secondary School), on his way home from school, said that because the flooding was so deep, he had to park his motorbike at the entrance of the alley and wait for the water to recede before returning to get it home.

Many motorcyclists who tried to speed through this section ended up with their engines stalling.

Due to the dark clouds, it was already pitch black even though it was only 4 PM. A kindergarten teacher in alley 90, Chinh Kinh Street (Thanh Xuan District), was using a broom to continuously sweep water out. "This street is frequently flooded whenever it rains, so when we see a storm coming, we have to quickly move 20 students to the second floor," she said.

A similar scene can be seen on Nguyen Tuan Street (Thanh Xuan District).

Water flooded into houses, forcing many shops on Nguyen Tuan Street to temporarily suspend business.

In the Xuan Tao area (Bac Tu Liem district), the water level reached about 50 cm, making it impossible for people and motorbikes to pass through.

They all had to walk through the deep floodwaters.

Upon seeing the heavy rain, many clothing vendors on Phan Van Truong Street (Cau Giay District) quickly tidied up and moved their goods to higher ground.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the weather in Hanoi during the first three days of the week (July 31st - August 2nd) will remain mildly hot and humid in the afternoon, with occasional showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. The highest temperature will fluctuate slightly around 33-34 degrees Celsius, and the lowest around 27-28 degrees Celsius.
