With the government promoting the development of the North-South high-speed railway system, Vietnam's steel industry has a great opportunity to demonstrate its ability to meet domestic demand and reduce dependence on imported steel.
Hoa Phat has been researching the production of rail steel for over 3 years.
"Steel King" Tran Dinh Long has just made a strong statement about his capacity to supply steel for this important project. According to estimates from consulting firms, the North-South high-speed railway project will require up to 6 million tons of various types of steel.
This is a huge volume of work that not every country is capable of handling, especially with such stringent quality requirements and tight deadlines.
As the leading steel producer in Southeast Asia and among the top 50 in the world , Mr. Tran Dinh Long affirmed Hoa Phat's commitment to four key points:
- Ensure the quantity of steel meets the requirements;
- Maintain international quality standards;
- Meeting delivery deadlines;
- Competitive pricing, lower than imported steel.
Currently, with a production capacity of 8.5 million tons of steel per year, Hoa Phat is the largest steel supplier in Southeast Asia.
When the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 Iron and Steel Complex project is completed in 2025, the group's crude steel production capacity will exceed 14 million tons per year, including 8.6 million tons of hot-rolled steel coils, one of the high-quality products serving high-tech industries such as mechanical engineering and construction.
In particular, Mr. Long emphasized that Hoa Phat has the capability to produce high-speed rail steel, a complex product requiring stringent technical standards.
According to Mr. Long, over the past three years, Hoa Phat has invested in research and development of rail steel, focusing on technical standards to serve the high-speed rail system.
In terms of technology, Mr. Long revealed that Hoa Phat will use advanced technology from the G7 group (including technologically advanced countries such as the UK, the US, Japan, etc.) to ensure that its products meet the highest standards.
Focus maximum effort on developing products for high-speed rail.
Earlier, in an interview with Tuoi Tre newspaper, Mr. Tran Dinh Long emphasized that building high-speed railway tracks is difficult and expensive, but Hoa Phat is determined to undertake it out of pride as a Vietnamese enterprise with the capability and technological potential to participate in large national projects.
By 2028, Hoa Phat is expected to complete its railway steel production and be ready to bid on supplying steel for the North-South high-speed railway project.
According to Professor Bui Xuan Phong, former chairman of the Vietnam Railway Economics and Transport Association, the participation of Hoa Phat or any other Vietnamese enterprise in building high-speed railways is "very much worth supporting".
"We have a policy of promoting localization and encouraging the development of private enterprises, so there's no reason not to support it," Mr. Phong said.
In early October 2024, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Danh Huy affirmed that the North-South high-speed railway project would be implemented using national budget funds, limiting reliance on foreign technology.
"If foreign contractors are involved, the prerequisite is that they must use goods and services that can be produced domestically, creating conditions for domestic businesses to participate in construction projects worth up to 34 billion USD," Mr. Huy said.
