According to the announcement on October 26 of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs , at the invitation of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Keir Starmer, General Secretary To Lam and his wife, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, will pay an official visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from October 28 to 30.

The visit coincides with many milestones

This is General Secretary To Lam's first visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (hereinafter referred to as the UK) as head of the Party.

The last time a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam visited the UK was in January 2013.

General Secretary To Lam's visit takes place as the two countries' relationship enters the sixth decade after the two sides established diplomatic relations in 1973.

This trip also marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries, when they affirmed their intention to elevate the relationship to a higher level.

Specifically, in September 2020, the UK - a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council - issued a new joint statement with Vietnam on Strategic Partnership. In it, the two sides proposed 7 priority areas of cooperation and affirmed that the two countries will aim to raise relations to a higher level in 10 years from 2020.

The United Nations Security Council has five permanent members. Vietnam has established comprehensive strategic partnerships with four of these five countries, including Russia, China, the United States and France.

Bilateral relations develop

Relations between Vietnam and the UK have developed positively in recent times. In terms of trade, the two countries signed the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) which officially took effect on December 31, 2020.

Bilateral trade turnover in 2024 will reach 8.424 billion USD, of which Vietnam will export 7.543 billion USD. Entering 2025, trade turnover in the first 8 months of the year will reach 6.1 billion USD, possibly reaching the highest milestone ever in 2025.

Regarding investment, the UK has nearly 606 valid investment projects in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of about 4.65 billion USD, ranking 15th out of 152 countries and territories with investment projects in Vietnam.

This country's investment capital focuses on processing industry (1.77 billion USD), real estate business (1.1 billion USD), and mining (701 million USD).

In recent times, Vietnam's cooperation in responding to climate change and energy transition with other countries has seen the UK as one of the most active and dynamic partners.

At the March 2022 meeting in Germany, G7 ministers decided to adopt the UK's proposal to support a G7-Vietnam Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) agreement.

Cooperation between the two countries in the semiconductor field has a lot of room and brings great potential in addition to traditional cooperation areas such as education and training.
