US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced a shortlist of five candidates to be the next Federal Reserve Chairman, while President Donald Trump said he expected to make a final decision before the end of the year.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on October 27, Secretary Bessent revealed the list of candidates including Fed Governor Christopher Waller, former Governor Kevin Warsh, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman and global fixed income investment director at BlackRock Inc. Rick Rieder.
Mr. Bessent, who is leading the interviews for the position, said he is planning to conduct a second round of interviews. He also expressed hope to present a list of strong candidates to the president shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday.
For his part, President Trump confirmed that he will likely make a decision on who will replace current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell by the end of the year. In addition, President Trump also reiterated that he does not think Secretary Bessent will leave his current position to head the Fed.
Current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's term ends in May 2026. Mr. Powell has been a frequent target of Mr. Trump's criticism for not lowering interest rates.
