US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced a shortlist of five candidates for the next Federal Reserve Chairman, while President Donald Trump has indicated he expects to make a final decision before the end of the year.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on October 27, Secretary Bessent revealed the list of candidates, which includes Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, former Governor Kevin Warsh, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman, and Global Head of Fixed Income Investments at BlackRock Inc. Rick Rieder.
Mr. Bessent, who is in charge of interviewing candidates for the position, said he is planning to conduct a second round of interviews. He also expressed hope of presenting a list of strong candidates to the President shortly after Thanksgiving.
For his part, President Trump confirmed that he may make a decision on who will replace current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell by the end of the year. In addition, President Trump reiterated that he does not believe Secretary Bessent will leave his current position to head the Fed.
Current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's term will end in May 2026. Powell has frequently been a target of criticism from Trump for not lowering interest rates.
