This is one of the annual activities aimed at regenerating and restoring natural aquatic resources, while also spreading the message of protecting the aquatic environment and biodiversity. The fish release activity takes place in the Saigon River (Dược Wharf) and the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, connected to the important river system of Ho Chi Minh City.
The program not only aims to replenish aquatic resources but also seeks to raise awareness and educate organizations and individuals about protecting and sustainably developing aquatic resources.

According to Ms. Vo Thi Mong Thu, Deputy Head of the Fisheries and Fisheries Inspection Department of Ho Chi Minh City, through the fish stocking activity, the city's fisheries sector hopes to create a widespread impact in society regarding the role and significance of protecting natural aquatic resources. This is not only the responsibility of state management agencies but also requires the joint efforts of the community, social organizations, religious groups, and the people.
"This activity also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness and advise monks, nuns, Buddhists, and the public to choose the right native aquatic species that are suitable for the natural environment when participating in releasing animals. Releasing invasive alien species that are not ecologically compatible can have negative impacts, disrupt the ecosystem balance, and affect native aquatic species and the water environment," Ms. Thu said.
In this fish stocking event, the two selected species were the red-tailed catfish and the grouper. These are native species with ecological and economic value, suitable for the natural water conditions of the Saigon River basin and the Can Gio estuary. Choosing the right species for stocking is considered a key factor in improving the survival rate, adaptability, and development of aquatic life after being released into the natural environment.

“Protecting, restoring, and developing aquatic resources not only contributes to stabilizing the livelihoods of a segment of fishermen but also has great significance in protecting biodiversity and the ecological environment. Activities like these help revitalize the city's rivers, make the environment cleaner, and enrich the spiritual lives of the people,” emphasized Ms. Vo Thi Mong Thu.
Aquaculture stocking activities in Ho Chi Minh City are expected to continue and expand in the future, linked to environmental protection programs, aquatic ecosystem restoration, and the city's goal of rapid and sustainable development.
