North Korea says failed satellite launch was a 'grave failure'

A plenary meeting of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) held from Friday to Sunday asked officials and researchers to analyze the failed military satellite launch and prepare for another one in the near future.

North Korea said its missile crashed into the sea "after losing thrust due to an abnormal start of the second stage engine", a rare candid admission by the North of a technical problem.

North Korea also vowed to continue developing nuclear capabilities and strengthen solidarity with other countries to oppose "the US strategy of world supremacy".

The meeting also discussed ensuring food self-sufficiency by increasing the country's agricultural output and meeting the annual grain production target.

North Korea is under strict international sanctions over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, and its economy is still struggling due to border lockdowns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
