A scene from the play "San Hau" directed by Tran Quynh Anh
Artist Xuan Truc performed the role of Phan Dinh Cong (play "San Hau") brilliantly.
On the evening of June 10 at Tran Huu Trang Theater, the atmosphere of the Cai Luong stage suddenly brightened with the play "San Hau" - a famous ancient Tuong work by Dao Tan, restored in the form of Cai Luong ancient Tuong by young director Tran Quynh Anh, script editor Bach To My. This is not only a courageous revival of a classic script, but also a milestone reporting the academic achievements of a young female director who has stepped out of the classroom with the aspiration to preserve and renew the work considered a Tuong stage heritage.
"San Hau" has long been a masterpiece in the treasure trove of traditional Vietnamese theatrical art, performed in many forms such as hát bội, cải lương, chèo... but still retains the core values of royal tragedy, the struggle between religion and life, between power and humanity.
Meritorious Artist Tu Suong, Trinh Trinh in the play "San Hau"
She was taught the technical foundation by lecturers such as Meritorious Artist Duc Hai, Meritorious Artist Cao Duc Xuan Hong, People's Artist Giang Manh Ha (K8B course), and especially Meritorious Artist Bach Long was the one who passed on to her the passion for the profession and the spirit of traditional opera - a flame that she has kept alive in her role as a director and on stage, under the stage name Bach Tu My.
The brightest highlight of the night was the veteran artists in the field of traditional opera – faces such as Meritorious Artist Trinh Trinh, Meritorious Artist Tu Suong, artists Xuan Truc, Trong Nhan, Ly Kieu Hanh… who demonstrated their virtuosity in each dance move and each inner performance.
Young actors participating in the play "San Hau" are loved by the audience
The audience was captivated by the performance of Meritorious Artist Tu Suong (as Ta Ngoc Dung), both rebellious and gentle, realizing her mistakes, her eyes and demeanor making the audience's hearts flutter. Meritorious Artist Trinh Trinh performed wonderfully as Ta Nguyet Kieu, a queen who identifies good and evil, to choose the path of religious practice to free the children from their karma.
Because they were greedy for power and cruel, a bloody tragedy happened to the Ta family. Artist Xuan Truc inherited the creativity in the singing and acting style of the late People's Artist Thanh Tong, so he played the role of Phan Dinh Cong very skillfully. All three appeared and were warmly cheered by the audience.
Tran Quynh Anh both directed and performed the role of Phan Diem in the play "San Hau"
The structure of the play was handled coherently by the young director, although there were still many scenes that were too long, and if the long parts were cut out, it would be more concise. The climaxes such as the chaotic court scene, the trial scene, the coronation scene, etc. were all elaborately staged, with a harmonious coordination between music , lighting, costumes and body.
Artist Trong Nhan has a singing voice and acting style similar to the late Meritorious Artist Vu Linh. He performed the role of Khuong Linh Ta excellently, alongside Diep Duy (Dong Kim Lan) who made many efforts.
Not only veteran artists, the appearance of young actors such as: Trong Nhan, Diep Duy, Hong Quyen, Dong Tuong, Son Minh, Ly Trung Cuong, Ha Nang, Tan Dat, Vu Hung, Ha My Anh, Nhu Y, Dang Quang, Thanh Du... shows a sustainable direction when connecting generations. The play becomes a true "professional stage", both a vivid lesson and a place to test the level of the next generation of artists. In particular, Trong Nhan as Khuong Linh Ta, Diep Duy as Dong Kim Lan have created many impressions through the coordination in singing, dancing and martial arts.
What is worth noting about the play "San Hau" by Tran Quynh Anh is the spirit of conservation in creation. The female director did not follow the tricks of gratuitous modernization, but chose to filter the muddy to bring out the clear, retaining the quintessence of ancient plays in the new structure of the staging. This is a vivid proof of the creative ability of today's generation of young theater directors to inherit with direction and depth.
After four years of formal training and hard work under the guidance of masters, Tran Quynh Anh – or Bach Tu My – had an impressive debut. She conveyed in each performance her belief that the path to preserving traditional art requires knowledge, high technique, perseverance and a deep love for the profession.
