Thanh Dong University: International scientific conference "Approach to sleep disorders and treatment methods combining modern medicine and traditional medicine"

On the morning of November 3, Thanh Dong University hosted an international scientific conference with the theme "Approach to sleep disorders and treatment methods combining modern medicine and traditional medicine".

Attending the workshop were representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Health, the Department of Education and Training of Hai Phong city, along with leading international experts in the field of sleep medicine; scientists, lecturers and students of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Thanh Dong University.

In his opening speech, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Hung - President of Thanh Dong University emphasized: “The conference is an important international scientific forum, gathering leading experts in the field of sleep. This is an opportunity for scientists to share new research results, expand cooperation in the treatment of sleep disorders, with the spirit of harmonious combination between modern medicine and traditional medicine. Organizing the conference demonstrates the proactive spirit of Thanh Dong University in the process of international scientific integration, towards developing research and application of integrated medicine to serve community health.”

The conference was lively with many in-depth reports. The most prominent of which was the report by Prof. Dr. Francis Martin on “Excessive sleepiness and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and sleep disorders”.

He is a leading expert in respiratory and sleep medicine, Honorary Professor of Hanoi Medical University, President of the French-Vietnamese Pulmonary Association, Honorary President of the Vietnam Sleep Association, Senior Professional Advisor of the Vinmec System, former Head of the Respiratory Department at many major hospitals in France. He has chaired many French-Vietnamese cooperative studies on the epidemiology of chronic lung diseases and sleep disorders, contributing to improving the professional capacity of Vietnamese medical staff and developing advanced treatment models.

The workshop also heard Dr. Franck Soyez - respiratory and allergist - report on the condition of "Chronic insomnia". He is currently Vice President of the French-Vietnamese Association of Pulmonary Diseases on Respiratory, Secretary General of International Relations of the Francophone Society on Respiratory, Chief Coordinator of international multicenter studies such as VQ 11, Exascore, Epsasia and has made important contributions to the standardization of clinical assessment tools and training of respiratory medicine specialists in Vietnam.

At the workshop, Prof. Dr. Dinh Xuan Anh Tuan, a leading expert in the field of respiratory medicine in France and Europe, he is currently the Head of the Department of Respiratory Function Testing at Cochin Hospital (Paris) reported "Update ERS & Application to COPD Treatment in Vietnam". He is the Head of the Department of Physiology - Pharmacology - Toxicology at Paris Descartes University of Medicine and Rector of the University of Medicine of Corse; Professor and Editor-in-Chief of the European Respiratory Journal, Member of CNRS, the British Pulmonary Association and the American Heart Association. He currently holds the role of Senior Expert Advisor of the Respiratory - Allergy - Clinical Immunology Unit.

Prof. Dr. Azhar Abdulnayef – neurologist and clinical neuroelectrologist, currently Head of the Neuroelectrology Unit at Clinique de l'Estrée, Paris, and neurologist at Lariboisière University. He has more than 30 years of experience and many international publications in the field of neurology and sleep research, reporting "The link between Alzheimer's disease and sleep disorders".

In addition, the Workshop also listened to Dr. Nguyen Minh Sang - Head of the Department of Sleep Medicine and Respiratory Pathology, Central Lung Hospital; member of many international cooperation projects, with more than 40 scientific works at home and abroad - introduce "Some characteristics and treatment of patients with sleep apnea syndrome at the Central Lung Hospital".

MSc. Dr. Cao Lan Anh, lecturer at Sorbonne University (France), expert in sleep disorders and public health, graduated from Hanoi Medical University and studied at Harvard University, with more than 30 years of clinical experience and international research, reported "Overview and approach to electrical safety in the treatment of sleep disorders".

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue - Senior Lecturer of Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Thanh Dong University; graduated from Hanoi Medical University, studied at Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (China), has more than 30 years of experience in researching and teaching Traditional Medicine - presented "Sleep disorders from the perspective of traditional medicine".

Dr. Ngo Danh Luc - Senior Lecturer of Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Thanh Dong University; former Deputy Director of the Military Traditional Medicine Institute, leading expert with more than 40 years of experience in treatment and training in the field of traditional medicine - shared "Methods of treating sleep disorders in traditional medicine".

The discussion session chaired by Prof. Dr. Phung Dac Cam recorded many in-depth exchanges on the direction of combining modern medicine and traditional medicine, applied in the treatment of sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea syndrome and chronic insomnia.

Within the framework of the program, Thanh Dong University and the French-Vietnamese Lung Association signed a memorandum of understanding, opening up opportunities for research collaboration and academic exchange in the field of respiratory and sleep. Also at the workshop, the parties signed a research cooperation agreement, marking a new development step in international cooperation of Thanh Dong University.

The workshop has academic significance and at the same time demonstrates the School's commitment to developing integrated medicine, applying technology and multidisciplinary research, contributing to improving the quality of public health care in the period of integration and digital transformation.
