On the morning of June 3, shrimp farmers in Vinh Trach Dong commune ( Bac Lieu city) informed Bac Lieu Newspaper about the incident of traders forcing down prices because they thought the shrimp had preservatives exceeding the permitted level.
A household sold shrimp to traders at a price deducted by 3,000 VND/kg because it was believed that the shrimp contained preservatives.
According to Mr. Pham Van Chu (Bien Tay A Hamlet, Vinh Trach Dong Commune), the third time he took shrimp samples for testing, the trader informed him that his shrimp used feed containing high levels of preservatives. However, the trader only informed him verbally and did not provide any test results from the authorities proving that the shrimp contained preservatives. This situation is not only happening to Mr. Chu, but also to many farming households in the commune and in Dong Hai District. Accordingly, traders only buy shrimp if the farming households agree to reduce the price by 3,000 - 5,000 VND/kg. Shrimp farming households in the commune have also contacted the feed company and were assured that the preservative content is very low according to the regulations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development .
Faced with price pressure, shrimp farmers in Vinh Trach Dong commune hope that authorities will investigate and verify the situation where traders make conclusions without legal basis, with the intention of taking advantage of farmers who do not understand the shrimp testing process to buy shrimp at low prices.
