"When the war in Ukraine ends, no matter what, the Russian army will be stronger than it is today. The Russian armed forces are learning, improving and applying the experience gained in combat," Supreme Allied Commander Europe Christopher Cavoli told German news agency Der Spiegel on October 20.
He warned that despite Russia's losses in the war with Ukraine, the Russian army would still be a formidable opponent for NATO. Therefore, according to him, NATO should not underestimate Moscow's military power.
He called on NATO to prepare quickly for this threat, as Russia would be an adversary with serious military potential. "That's why we have to be prepared and we need armed forces that can withstand it," he said.
According to Mr. Cavoli, the alliance's new defense plans, as well as increased obligations for individual NATO members, need to be implemented quickly. "When I say fast, I mean we have to be faster than the Russians," he stressed.
Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an increase in the size of the Russian armed forces by 180,000 personnel, bringing the total to 2.39 million personnel, including 1.5 million active military personnel. This is the third decree signed by President Putin since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
