After much effort, 300,000 oyster spat, nurtured by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center in the concentrated mollusk production area of Van Don at Lo Ho, Van Yen commune, have met the requirements for sale to mollusk farmers in the province. The percentage of oyster spat produced and nurtured meets the technical standards for commercial farming. In early December 2024, the first batch of nurtured oyster spat was sold by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center to mollusk farmers in Van Don district.
Mr. Trac Van Lan (a mollusk farmer in Quan Lan commune, Van Don district) shared: "I just bought 150,000 oyster spat from Lo Ho. The spat here has the advantage of being suitable for the water source in the Van Don sea area, so when brought to commercial farming, it has the potential to grow and develop well. Transportation is also nearby, ensuring the spat is healthy and reducing costs compared to having to go all the way to Nam Dinh to buy spat as before."
Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, Head of the Technical Practice and Transfer Station, Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, said: After more than 10 days of rearing, the oyster spat has reached size level 2 and is ready for sale to households for commercial farming. The characteristics of the mollusk spat reared in the concentrated mollusk production area of Van Don are very favorable because they have already adapted to the water environment here.
Currently, Van Don district has a demand for 10 million mollusk juveniles of various species, but the local supply only meets 5% of this demand. Successfully breeding mollusk juveniles is a crucial condition for realizing Quang Ninh province's goal of producing 1.5 billion mollusk juveniles per year to supply the market within the province and other localities nationwide.
Mr. Phan Thanh Nghi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: "Upon being assigned the task, the unit successfully researched and bred the first batch of mollusk seedlings for sale to the market. This is only the first batch of seedlings exported by the Center. The Department will continue to strengthen its guidance on activities at this Center to achieve the initial goals and to effectively utilize and operate the entire water surface area and infrastructure that has been invested in."
The goal of Quang Ninh's agricultural sector by the end of 2024 is to successfully produce and breed 1 million oyster spat in the concentrated mollusk production area of Van Don to serve the aquaculture needs of fishermen, contributing to promoting marine farming activities after typhoon No. 3, and serving sustainable aquaculture.
