As the race entered its final meters, Ricardo Rosado and Evans Kimtai Kiprono were in sixth and fifth place respectively. But near the finish line, the Kenyan athlete was exhausted and unable to continue running.
Instead of taking advantage of the opportunity to overtake and finish ahead, Rosado slowed down and helped Evans Kimtai Kiprono cross the finish line with him. He also let Kiprono cross the finish line first, accepting sixth place.
In a subsequent interview with Malaga Hoy , the Spanish athlete said: "Running a marathon is an experience. Today he performed better than me throughout the race, so I think he deserved fifth place. You need to empathize with your opponent, and I will continue to do so."
As the Spanish athlete who finished first with a time of 2 hours 14 minutes and 23 seconds, Rosado received 1,000 Euros. However, he missed out on the 500 Euro bonus for finishing fifth.
However, according to local media, the organizers awarded him an additional 500 Euros for his fifth-place finish for his noble act of sportsmanship . "Rosado's action of helping his Kenyan opponent just meters from the finish line demonstrates the spirit of solidarity and the values that make this sport so great."
According to El Mundo , after crossing the finish line, Kiprono was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment due to dehydration.
At the Malaga Marathon on December 10th, Kiprono's fellow Kenyan, Charles Mneria, finished first with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 54 seconds in the men's event. Abdelilah El Maimouni from Morocco came second, and another Kenyan athlete, Musa Kipsoyan, finished third.
In the women's event, Pamela Jepkosgei of Kenya finished first, followed by Lilia Fisikovici of Moldova and Hanna Lindholm of Sweden.
