Returning to the revolutionary homeland of Hoang Chau

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Another autumn has arrived, and the stirring melody of the song "August 19th" by composer Xuan Oanh resonates, reminding generations to always remember the momentous historical event of the Vietnamese nation - the August Revolution of 1945. With that pride, we visited Hoang Chau commune, a revolutionary homeland that marked a significant moment in the revolutionary struggle 80 years ago.

Con Ba Cay Revolutionary Historical Site - a "red address" for educating the younger generation about patriotic traditions.

At the Con Ba Cay Historical Site in Hong Nhue village, we met veteran Hoang Khac Vang from Thanh Tri village – a man with a deep understanding of the area's history. Pointing to a bas-relief depicting the battle where self-defense fighters captured District Chief Pham Trung Bao and 12 security guards who were surrounded by Viet Minh troops, Mr. Vang recounted clearly that 80 years ago, following the Central Party Standing Committee's directive of March 12, 1945, "The Japanese and French are fighting each other, and this is our action," and the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee's directive, the Hoang Hoa Party branch and Viet Minh Committee seized the opportunity, calling on all strata of the people to rise up in rebellion to seize power. Following this call, many large rallies, demonstrations, and marches took place in villages and districts, causing great confusion and anxiety among the enemy.

Amidst the rising revolutionary fervor in Hoang Hoa, on July 23, 1945, the Governor of Thanh Hoa Province dispatched a security force of 34 soldiers led by Quan Hien to the district capital to coordinate with the Hoang Hoa district chief in suppressing the revolutionary movement in Dang Trung (formerly Hoang Dao commune) and Lien Chau - Hoa Loc (formerly Hoang Chau commune), which they considered the "cradle" of the revolution.

Having learned of the enemy's terrorist plot, under the direction of the Party branch and the Viet Minh Committee of the district, the district's self-defense force's operational plan was implemented on the night of July 23rd. In Dang Trung, a force of 12 soldiers ambushed the enemy at Ma Nhon islet; in Lien Chau - Hoa Loc, the self-defense forces of Hoa Loc, Hai Chau, Hoang Chung, Ngoc Long villages and neighboring villages in Bai Trach commune deployed combat forces at road intersections, ready to fight the enemy.

Comprehensively reforming propaganda and mass mobilization work to meet the development requirements of the new era.On the morning of July 3rd, the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department, in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy, organized a national conference to train on propaganda and mass mobilization work in 2026, using a hybrid format combining in-person and online participation, connecting participants nationwide.

On the morning of July 24, 1945, under the command of Quan Hien, 22 fully armed security guards marched from the district headquarters through Quang Market and then straight along Ha Do Road to Lien Chau - Hoa Loc (Hoang Chau). Around 10 a.m., upon reaching Hoang Chung communal house, they concentrated their forces to attack Lien Chau - Hoa Loc. At this time, our self-defense forces surrounded them, using loudspeakers to call on the enemy to surrender and storming the communal house. Using machetes, they engaged in hand-to-hand combat and captured the district chief Pham Trung Bao and 12 security guards alive.

At noon that same day, the Party cell and the Hoang Hoa Viet Minh Committee organized a large-scale rally at Con Ba Cay with nearly 10,000 people and national salvation self-defense forces participating to celebrate the victory. The atmosphere of the rally was extremely vibrant, and the red flag with a yellow star was publicly raised and flew proudly over Con Ba Cay for the first time.

With his powerful and moving storytelling, Mr. Vang's story became even more captivating for young people. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, a student in class 12A4 at Hoang Hoa 4 High School, said: “I am very proud to be born and raised in the revolutionary homeland of Hoang Chau, a place that marks an important event in the August 1945 uprising in the former Hoang Hoa district. Following in the tradition of our ancestors, I promise to study hard and become a useful citizen for society.”

As for the historical revolutionary site of Lien Chau communal house, where many important events took place, it was the site of a meeting on July 27, 1945, when Viet Minh cadres declared the establishment of the National Liberation Committee of the district and villages; and the abolition of the tax system imposed by the Japanese and French. On August 15, 1945, the district's National Liberation Committee established a civil court to try Vietnamese traitors, informants, and thugs both within and outside the commune. To preserve and promote the value of the site, on June 11, 1992, Lien Chau communal house was recognized as a national historical site and has since been renovated and beautified, becoming a significant landmark for the younger generation.

Eighty years have passed, and the names of some places and villages have changed. Despite these changes in naming conventions, the revolutionary spirit remains deeply ingrained in the land and people of this region. Visiting these "red addresses" in Hoang Chau commune these days, and meeting and talking with the kind and hospitable people, we gain a deeper understanding of the nation's glorious history and a more profound appreciation of the patriotism, heroic sacrifices, and revolutionary spirit of previous generations.

Mr. Le Ngoc Hanh, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Hoang Chau Commune, said: “Hoang Chau Commune is proud to have 8 historical and cultural revolutionary relics, including 3 national-level relics and 5 provincial-level relics. In recent years, the management, preservation, and promotion of the value of historical relics have always been a priority for the commune's Party committee and government, especially the preservation, exploitation, and restoration of classified historical and cultural relics. In addition, Hoang Chau Commune has coordinated with various organizations and units to organize many traditional education activities, tours, and practical experiences for students and young people. Through these activities, the children gain a better understanding of their roots, thereby enhancing their responsibility in preserving and promoting the cultural and historical revolutionary values of the locality.”
