The festival took place from November 17 to 26 at Kim Ma Theater, with the participation of more than 1,000 artists and professional actors from 10 art units performing 14 elaborately staged plays.

In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong emphasized that the 2025 National Tuong and Folk Opera Festival is an important event of the cultural sector, a place that brings together the quintessence of traditional arts.

According to Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, Tuong and folk opera are traditional art forms with unique values of Vietnamese culture. However, in the face of rapid changes in social life, traditional arts are facing many difficulties. Many Party Resolutions have clearly identified the requirements for innovation, improving creative quality, combining preservation with promotion of traditional artistic values, perfecting policy mechanisms and creating favorable conditions for artists to develop. These are important orientations to continue to unleash the potential of Tuong and folk opera in the new period.

“This year’s festival is an opportunity to take a deeper look at the current state of creation, staging and performance; assess the capacity of the artists; their ability to approach contemporary life; as well as identify innovative efforts in creation. These results will be an important basis for formulating policies to support traditional theatrical forms,” Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong affirmed.

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that in the coming time, the Ministry will improve the financial mechanism; innovate the method of ordering works; increase investment in training young artists; support the transfer of skills in a more specialized and systematic way. The Ministry also requested the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Department of Culture and Sports to direct art units to proactively innovate production organization; boldly create in staging; maintain artistic identity; expand performance spaces; strengthen connections with schools and the community; pay special attention to training the next generation. The Department of Performing Arts continues to research and advise on perfecting mechanisms and policies for traditional arts.
Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong expressed his hope that each artist, despite difficult conditions, would maintain their passion and sense of responsibility for their profession; at the same time, he affirmed that the results of the festival would be an important information channel for management agencies in researching, building policies and orienting the development of traditional arts.
The 14 plays participating in the festival come from traditional art units of Thanh Hoa, Khanh Hoa, Gia Lai, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nghe An and the Vietnam National Traditional Theater. The plays and folk operas participating in the festival all have a contemporary feel but still retain the traditional core, contributing to building an advanced Vietnamese theater with a strong national identity, aiming at the goal of developing culture for the people and arousing the aspiration for a prosperous and happy Vietnam.

The festival's artistic council includes prestigious and experienced artists: People's Artist Le Tien Tho, People's Artist Pham Thi Kim Oanh (Kieu Oanh), People's Artist Trinh Thi Hong Luu, People's Artist Nguyen Dat Tang, and People's Artist Nguyen Ngoc Khanh.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, the Vietnam National Traditional Theatre performed the play “Fire in Phien Ngung” based on the novel of the same name by Dr. Khuc Minh Tuan, script by author Nguyen Sy Chuc, directed by People's Artist Hoang Quynh Mai. The play focused on the achievements of Queen Khuc Thua My during her time in Phien Ngung for more than a year as a “Hoan Hao Envoy”, in fact, she was both a hostage for the Southern Han Dynasty and an insider in the enemy's heart to prevent from afar any plot to invade our country.
The next plays will be performed at Kim Ma Theater at 9:30 and 20:00 from November 18 to 24. The closing ceremony and award ceremony will be at 20:00 on November 26.
